Goebel to Go East Bu United Press LOS ANGELES, June 9—Colonel Arthur Goebel, winner of the Dole flight to Hawaii, plans to leave Tuesday or Wednesday for the east in preparation for a nonstop flight from Paris to New York. Exceptional speed at high altitude is expected on his flight from Los Angeles to New York, which probably will be made in two jumps as he puts his plane, the Yankee Docdle, through its final tests before shipping it to France. The ship is a low-winged Lockheed explorer monoplane, with the single cockpit well back of the wing structure. It has a gasoline capacity of 818 gallons. Radio and instrument experts worked all Tuesday installing a short wave set and compensating the three compasses with which the plane is equipped.
Pilot Outlasts Motor
Be T'vitrr’ P<-*ss MURPHYSBORO, 111., June 9. The endurance of man bested the endurance of a motor today when Paul Montgomery was forced down on his unique training flight by a burned out connecting rod. A few minutes after he turned forty-eight hours in his “fly four hours—and then—refuel” test, the motor of his Barling plane gave out and Montgomery had outlasted his mount. And with the end of the flight, it was revealed that during the night when he landed for fuel, the landing gear of his plane was crushed. It was repaired, however, while the refueling was under way. Montgomery conceived the trick flight as good training for the hop he hopes to make this summer from Rome to Dallas, Tex.
Tour Entries Close With a deadline today on entry of planes in the second annual allIndiana tour, to start ini Hoosier airport next Monday, Lee H. The award will be made on a basis of pilot’s regularity, attendance, and caution in flying on the trip. The tour ends at Mars Hill airport Saturday, June 21, after stopping at sixteen Indiana cities. ‘RAIN BABY’ AT HOSPITAL WHILE MOTHERWORKS No Trace Is Discovered of Deserter of Tiny 'Back Seat’ Infant. Robert Eugene Breedlove, year-old Indianapolis “rain baby,” remains at the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children while Mrs. Sally Marie Breedlove, the mother who deserted him, is employed in a private home in Indianapolis. Meanwhile, at city hospital, the Indirnapolis “back seat” baby, whose mother said, in a note left with it, is Catherine Lois Armin, is contented. The baby was found abandoned in the back seat of an automobile parked in the downtown section the day after Mrs. Breedlove was granted a suspended sentence in juvenile court here on child neglect charges for her abandonment of the “rain baby.” Found Eight Hours Later Mrs. Breedlove has not expended any part of $2,200 given her by sympathizers during the time she remained in the Marion county jail after her arrest for deserting her son at the side of a country road near here. The baby was found eight hours later sobbing in a downpour of rain. Whether the money will be used td purchase her a home or whether it will be used to give her a business training course to fit her for later earning to support herself and her two children, the “rain baby” and Vernon Lee, 3, has not been determined by Miss Bess Robbins, attorney appointed by the Indianapolis Bar Association to defend Mrs. Breedlove in her trial, said today. Action to Be Taken Court action will be taken within a few days. Miss Robbins said today, to have the “rain baby” turned over to the mother. Mrs. Breedlove was given a suspended prison sentence of six months for the desertion. Whether action will be taken here or at Bloomington is uncertain. No trace has been found of the .nother of the abandoned girl baby. The woman was identified as having been a patient at city hospital when the child was born. She abandoned the child, with its baby clothing wrapped in a bundle, in a parked car downtown, leaving a note asking it be sent to a “good Catholic home” the day she was discharged from the hospital. She is believed to live in Chicago. CITIZENSHIP MEDALS TO BE PRESENTED Sons of American Revolution A. - e Sponsoring Awards.
