MIMIC BATTLE '■ IN AIR SLATED SUNDAY NIGHT Anti-Aircraft Guns to Fight Off ‘Attack’ of Planes on War Piaza. A sky army will attack Indianapolis Sunday night. Planes will bombard the War Memorial plaza while anti-craft guns will defend the city. This mimic battle to demonstrate modem warfare will be held in connection with the visit to the city of th** Sixty-first Coast artillery. A squadron of five planes piloted by aviators of the Thirty-eight division, will make the attack at 8 p. m. The anti-craft regiment using searchlight- will defend the city. Plans foj the demonstration are being completed by the aviation committee of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, national guard officers, reserves and regular army officers. BLAZE DAMAGE AT CREOSOTING PLANT $20,000 Strong Wind Is Believed to Have Saved Loss From Being Greater. Although Republic Creosoting Company officials today said they had not estimated damage of a fire that swept two huge stacks of railway ties at their plant, Minnesota street and Tibbs avenue, Wednesday, fire department heads placed the damage at $20,000. It is believed more than 15,000 ties, valued at $1.25 or more each, were burned. That the loss did not mount to hundreds of thousands of dollars was due to a strong wind from the south that whipped the stubborn blaze away from other tie stacks, three mammoth creosive drums,

and the plant buildings, a few hundred feet south of the blaze. Firemen strung more than a dozen hose lines and soaked the burning piles of ties to prevent the flames from spreading. Dense clouds of smoke billowing from the oil-soaked timber spread a blanket of darkness over West Indianapolis and attracted several thousand persons during the five hours fire companies battled the blaze. Seven firemen were overcome by intense heat, but all were treated at the scene by an ambulance crew dispatched from city hospital on the second fire alarm. Lack of water pressure rendered fire apparatus impotent for some time, but lines of hose were laid from a grsvel pit a mile away, and pumper engines forced the water through nozzles to quench the flames. Street car service was disrupted in West Indianapolis when a trolley line melted, and electric light and power lines also were endangered. Girl Swimmer Drowns Bu Fnitnl Press NORTH VERNON. Ind.. June ’.—The eastern seaboard from Maryland to Maine sought relief today from a severe heat wave which already has caused several deaths and numerous prostrations. Little surcease was expected before Friday or Saturday. Baltimore was the hottest place in the east Wednesday with a temperature of 96. Six deaths were attributed to the heat in New York City. Fights Convassing Fee The Grand Union Tea Company of New Jersey filed a suit Wednesday in the Evansville federal district court, asking that an ordinance passed by the city of Shoals requiring tea and coffee canvassers to pay a $lO-a-day fee be declared null and void. The suit alleges the ordinance is class legislation.
