EIGHT MARTYRS TO RELIGION TO BE CANONIZED Pope Will Conduct Rites for Priests Slain Years Ago by Indians. Bu Cnitrd pr- * PARIS, June s.—ln the Basilica of Saint Piprre at Rome, the pope will canoniz** on June 29 eight French missionaries who were martyred by the Canadian Indians to whom they carried the Christian religion in the seventeenth century. Fanv.'' of several of thrb* martyrs still live in the region of Orleans. Principal among the canonized martyrs are Father Isaac Jogues and Father Jean De Brebeuf, who led their companions, mostly Jesuit priests, into the wilderness around the Great Lakes. Father Jogues originally was from Orleans, and there are thousands of descendants of his brothers and sisters. Many of them are going to Rome for the beatification. The French author, Chateaubriant, took inspiration from Father Jogues for Pere Aubry in his bock, “Atala." During the colonization of Canada and that portion of America which comprises the present rich belt from the Appalachians to the Mississippi, north of the Ohio river, France sent 8,000 missionary ex- ‘ plorers. Files of the monastaries were destroyed during the revolution, and all trace has been lost of many of them, but there are family records which show the participation of many of these young priests. For that reason many of the martyrs never can be canonized. Since 1866 the South African diamond fields have yielded diamonds of the total value of $1,375,000,000.
