Laziness in Husbands Is Real Crime BY MARTHA LEE The husband whose wife devises a way of making lazy husbands industrious and ambitious can retire for life and live on his wife's income. Because there are any number of husbands who, contrary to the popular belW tha*- marriage "always straightens a man out" simply stretch out after the tedious walk to the altar, and never do get rested up again. Wives with such husoands haven’t much choice in the matter. So far no invention to stir a lazy husband's blood into action has been perfected. The wife can plague him. nag him, be sweet and kind and gentle, offer him encouragement and good food and praise his ego to the skies and if he is lazy he will stay lazy. Which means she must leave him to toast his toes in the sun by himself or else get a job herself and take up the task of supporting herself in the style to which she had become accustomed. Or there is something else she can do. She can accept the help of both their families, which will be bad for both of them. Ambition Synonymous One of the traits most closely allied with manhood is ambition. It has been bracketed with that word for so long they r-i.most are synonymous. Being ambitious does not necessarily mean setting out to build new worlds <or new records). It simply means having the strength of character to shoulder an obligation and march on with it. It means simply doing the most one is capable of each day. Which, after all, is not such an exorbitant amount to ask. Dear Miss Lee—Could you advise a wife What to do to make her husband go *o work and atick with it? We have a baby nearly nine months old and my oeople have supported us ever since tne day we were married. Mv husband has had several iobs. He works Just long enough to make us think he is really willing to work and tlicn cults. My mother and father are getting old. Mv father has been such a hard working man all his life. I am really ashamed to have him support us. What can I do? Even after all they have done for us. mv husband does not like them. They are willing to take the baby and me and give us a home. Should I go back to them? F. 3. Earn the Money There is no recipe that I know of to get your husband to stick to a job. unless it is to starve him if he doesn't. It’s up to you to do what you think best. Os course it is impossible for you to expect your parents to support you any longer. One of the reasons your husband does not like your mother and father probably is because he was able to work them so easily. If you would be unhappy without jour husband, do-not leave him Find work, and earn the money you heed to support your child and run your home. If you would not be unhappy without him, take your child to your parents and find work for the support of yourself and the child. Incidentally your leaving might have a rejuvenating affect upon your husband’s waning strength. If he cares anything about you and your baby and he sees you mean business about him getting a job and keeping it. he might make a sincere effort to please you. And if he doesn’t care about the

two of you, you are better rid of him, as he certainly does not add much to the home life and atmosphere. If your child is a boy it will not be good for him to grow up in an atmosphere where everybody works but father. If *he child is a girl, she will learn to dislike her father intensely because he lolls around the house instead of being out and about his business, like other girls’ fathers. PARIS, June 5. HAVE you noted the difference in today's idea of evening garments &!, compared to that of even a few years ago? Once we thought that to be “elegant” In our evening attire, we had to fuss and flutter, wisp and trail all over the place. Today we feel that to be elegant, even our tulle dresses which might have some legitimate reason to flutter must be restrained stringently. And there is no question in my mind as to the true elegance of today’s evening wear. Naturally it is a great deal harder to achieve that line of real beauty in a gown (or anything else) by intelligent construction and harmonious proportioning of the thing itself, than it is to take a poor structure and achieve an effect of beauty by covering it up with many decorative things. The evening gowns of today are quiet, but how intricately must they be fashioned, how well done, how well planned and executed! And then what good taste the woman herself must display in her accessories! They too are simple, yet at the same time more elaborate—and the few that one wears are more ex-

pensive than the many one used to wear. 0 0 0 All that glitters and glitters plenty is the evening jewelry mode. If your necklace is formed of crystal, but for* any reason doesn’t glitter, then away it must go in favor of one that does—prystal is a new composition very much in vogue now which was fashioned expressly for the purpose of out-glit-tering crystal. And what we used to call rhinestones, or imitation diamonds, have become importapt in their own right as brilliants, diamante and strass. Overnight, Paris has decided to wear adorable collars and cuffs made of ordinary canvas woven in squares, on sweaters and sports blouses. In the same instant we found out how to make them, and tell you about it in a 2-cent stamp —no, I mean you send the 2-cent stamp to Dare, care of The Times, and I send you the illustrated directions. 000 A7'ELLOW and Jenny blue are featured in the sports collection at the house of Jenny. Also a lot of black and white, and some rose. The black, white and rose are especially for evening. By the “sports collection” is meant of course for summer resort wear. Jenny also loves her little sweaters, obviously new and of this season, short waisted as they are and very often in bolero effects, but very decidedly sweaterish nevertheless. And often they are embroidered all around the neck and armholes to match the tiny fruit or flowered design in the sweater itself. 000 Au Revoir!
