MOTORIST FINDS SENDING CAR TO EUROPEJS EASY A. A. A. Assumes Charge of Most of Details for Foreign Tourists. Bji S'EA Service WASHINGTON, May 31.—Thousands of American tourists will take their auomobiles to Europe this summer with no more trouble than -• n-ould have crossing from the . * Gonad a. r.at for a trip ar are many , for the most P— ted to representatives iu lerican Automobile Association and its local branches. This organization has made arrangements with the American and European customs authorities, as well as the International Tourists’ Association, by which all necessary papers, licenses and other means of identification may be obtained, and all payments made at one time to relieve the tourist of all further troubles for the rest of his trip. The result is that the tourist manning to take his car abroad merely steps into his local automobile club, gives the representative his itinerary for whatever time he expects to stay abroad, deposits SIOO to cover costs of the

various papers and forgets about the rest. When he buys his ticket at the steamship agency he also buys transportation for his car. If the tourist is not an automobile club member, the steamship agent, In most cases, will take care of the details of his automobile passage abroad. This consists cf obtaining a “tryptique,” or customs pass, for the temporary importation of a car into one country only, or a “carnet de passage en douanes” or international customs pass for a passage into twelve of the leading countries in Europe; an “international traveling pass” or driver's license for each person intending to drive the car in Europe; marine insurance; foreign touring insurance; license tags, and other incidental papers. Must Have Passport In addition, of course, the automobile tourist, as well as any tourist, must obtain a passport from the clerk of the local United States district court, as well as a vise for each of the countries to be visited. The latter are obtained from the consular offices of these countries in New' York. With the passport must go two unretouched photographs of each person desiring to go abroad. The international traveling pass also requires five similar photographs of each person intending to drive the car abroad, with a photostat copy of the home state driving license or, where there is no such license, a certificate from the local police chief, certifying to the driver’s ability to operate the automobile. No trouble for Motorist The A. A. A., or the steamship company, has all these papers ready for the tourist when he reaches
New York. All the motorist need do is drive up the dock and leave his car there. It is advisable to get there with the tank almost empty, for it will be emptied anyway and the battery terminals disconnected for its passage aboard ship. At the other side enough gasoline is put in to get the car off to the next fuel station. Arriving at the European port, the motorist will be met by an A. A. A. or steamship company representative, who will have had all necessary papers prepared for him. Since American license plates are recognized only in Italy, he also will have ready the necessary plates for the car in each of the countries to be visited. To help the tourist further the A. A. A. has prepared a manual of conversation in six languages, especie.'ly designed for the use of motorists. This book, in addition to being a touring map of the British Isles and of Europe, are part of the service given auto club members. There is nothing else to do but drive on certain of passage through the various customs lines on the continent merely by showing the necessary papers. On the return heme these papers are given up at the place where they were obtained and the SIOO deposit is refunded, minus the costs for the various papers. . Friend Gets Estate B. WORK BEGUN ON 1 SCENIC ROAD TO MT. VERNON Motorists May Ride Along Potomac to Old Mansion of Nation’s Father. Bit .V PA Servlet WASHINGTON, May 31.—Work has been stai ted on one of the shortest highways in the United States. Although only fifteen miles long, it will traverse a territory rich in historic interest, taking motorists from the seat of the country’s government, Washington, to the home of its first President, George Washington's old mansion at Mt. Vernon. Built on a right-of-way 200 feet wide, the Mt. Vernon Memorial highway will follow the course of the historic Potomac river through little towns and villages made famous by the father of our country. Legislative action for construction was taken in May, 1928, and by the time the road is ready for dedication on Feb 22, 193? the 200th aniversary of Washingto i’s birth, it is estimated that $4,500,000, the amount authorized for its construction, will have been spent. Proposed 40 Years Ago The first movement for the construction of this highway was taken by Virginia nearly forty years ago. The road, as planned then, was to be sixty feet wide with seventy feet to be allowed on each side for landscaping. A mile was to be allotted each of the original thirteen states, so each might have an opportunity for special memorials. Actual construction started last October, when fills along the road were leveled off. Now the road is beginning to shape into one of the most modem in the country, its plans calling for a wide highway embodying the use of ramps, bridges and bypasses. Tourists in the capital city can reach the highways easily. It begins at Columbia island in the Potomac river at a point opposite the Lincoln memorial. Connected With City It is connected with the city by the Arlington memorial bridge. A short distance to the east is Arlington Memorial cemetery, where the remains of many of the nation’s prominent men are interred. Here the road follows the river south and across Boundary Channel bridges and Roaches Run into Arlington, the birthplace of Nellie Custis, adopted daughter of George Washington and his wife and home of the Stuarts. At Four-Mile Run a bridge is to be built across the river. Land around this place was bought by Washington in 1775 and surveyed by him in 1785. From here the road follows the old Alexandria canal, engineered by Washington, into the historic town of Alexandria. Revolutionary Relics in Homes Many old homes and relics of the revolutionary period are to be found here, including the George Washington national Masonic memorial. Then on to cross a fill and bridge at Hunting creek, where Washington and his friends used to hunt fox, and into Wellington, Va., where Tobias Lear, Washington’s secretary, lived. Across Hunting creek is the old Mansion house farm, where Washington lived from 1747 to 1779. This house wlil be one of the landmarks to tourists when the road is completed. On to ML Vernon From Wellington, the road continues on the Mt. Vcmon, passing historic Ft. Hunt en route, and crossing Little Hunting creek. National landmarks and natural beauty spots along the highway are to be retained. Historic trees and other features are to be guarded by board fences during course of construction, and the highway will

50,000 COACHES ARE OPERATED ON BUUINES Business Has Had Growth Amazing in Its Extent in 20 Years. Today the United States is busminded. Close to 50.000 motor coaches, operated by 6,000 independent bus companies and the railroads, are now on the roads. Almost an equal number serve for the transportation of children to schools in rural communities. Last year every man, woman and child in the United States made an average of fifteen trips on revenue busses only. These figures become all the more impressive when it is considered that the first primitive motor bus to be operated on a regular route in the western hemisphere lumbered up Fifth avenue, New York, just twenty years ago. Now you may travel from the Atlantic to the Pacific in Pullman chair-car type busses in five days and twenty-two hours, writes Michel Mok in the July Popular Science Monthly. But that is not all. The crude contraption that frightened the cab horses on Fifth avenue in 1910 has grown into a sleek, streamlined, 175horse power rolling hotel. Huge sleeper busses, equipped with berths, washbowls, lavatories and restaurant service for twentysix passengers, have been in regular operation between San Francisco and Los Angeles for about a year. On May 1, a similar service was established between Chicago and Detroit and between St. Louis and Kansas City. The Greyhound Lines, a few weeks ago, made anew arrangement for those who wish to travel by bus In the daytime, but do not want to doze in reclining bus seats at
