STATE STARTS RESTORING OF PIONEER TOWN Spring Mill Village to Be Center of Interest in Park at Mitchell. Perhaps no project of the state park department ever has developed more Interest and enthusiasm than the new state park at Mitchell. When this property was taken over last year the department believed it had come trio control of 1,100 acres of virgin timber land spotted with a number of large and interesting eaves. Upon further investigation this proved to be true to a most gratifying extent, but far more thrilling was the discovery of the historica significance of the Spring Mill village that once nestled in a secluded hollow in the heart of the area. The name Spring Mill has been adopted for the park. Surrounding the large stone mill <& tttTee-story structure still standing) were found the foundations of numerous buildings that once constituted a typical pioneer settlement of the early nineteenth centijrv.'v Historical research revealed that the village was founded about 1816 by Cuthbert and Thomas Bullitt, relatives of George Washington, who built the mill, two fine colonial residence!;. a schoolhouse, a nursery and other small structures. Village Being Restored The mill was operated by water carried overhead in a flume from a stream emerging from a cave in the side of a hill. Other subterranean streams and springs empty into the mill hollow and ripple through the long forgotten village. It will be the aim of the department to restore the village in its entirety. Already work in restoring the old mill is nearing completion Great timbers have been cut to replace those that had rottted and the walls- have been strengthened and pointed up. One of the original log cabins that once was the mill office has been restored and the original pcstoffice has been identified and saved. Roads leading down into the hollow have been repaired and made passable for motor vehicle traffic and preparations are going forward toward development of trails leading to the various scenic caves and the location of camping areas. County Is Assisting Lawrence county citizens are cooperating in this development. By bond'issue the county procured the funds for purchase of a major part of the land and now is proceeding with road developments w'hich will leave the park free of public highways. That part of the park which includes the mill village was given to the state by the Lehigh Portland Cement Company, which has given every assistance in the park development. Season after season Hoosiers and others seeking rest and relaxation come to Lake Manitou in increasing numbers, and the coming season is expected to be the biggest one in the history of the lake. Located on the southern edge of the Indiana lake region, it is easily accessible from the south, two and one-half hours from Indiananolis over U. S. Road 31 or State Roads 19 and 25, with pavement all the way. It is just 100 miles from Indianapolis on the Nickel Plate road and 100 miles from Chicago on the Erie. It is forty-five miles directly south of South Bend on Road 31, and sixty-five miles directly west of Ft. Wayne on State Road 14. Bus lines are available from all directions. Lake Manitou lies just a mile to the east of the city of Rochester, surrounded by hills and wooded groves. It is four miles long and two and one-half miles wide at its widest part. It nas an unusually irregular shore line and many islands that make it a beautiful and scenic body of water. The depth varies all the way from a few feet to forty-five feet. Lake Mantiou has a number of good hotels, varying in size and located on all sides of the lake.

The largest and best are equipped with running water, baths, and have all conveniences afid service of city hostelries. Three hundred cottages dot the shores of Lake Manitou. Most of these can be rented by the week, month or season. They are served by groceries, dairies and truck wagons from Rochester daily. A boat goes with each cottage and all have garages. Several well-regulated bathing beaches are to be found about Lake Manitou. These are supervised and are well equipped for children and beginners as well as experts. A beautiful dance pavilion is located on the bank of the lake. Two large outdoor places, under hotel management, boast fine orchestras. The lake is a natural breeding ground for small-mouthed bass, crappies, sunfish, perch, pike, gog-gle-eye and catfish. It is stocked by the state every spring and an early closed season is enforced rigidly. The Izaak Walton League maintains an immense fish hatchery nearby. A nine-hole golf course with wellwatered greens and good fairways awaits the golfers. A large and commodious clubhouse, the Rochester Country Club, is at the water’s edge, where showers and lockers, refreshments, and club service are available. Rochester is a city of 4.000 population, located a mile west of Lake Manitou and connected with the resort by concrete roads from all sides. It is the county seat of Fulton county, in the center of an agricultural district.
