SPEEDWAY CITY OWES ITS BIRTH AND GROWTH TD AUTO BUSINESS! ONE-DAY CAPITAL OF MOTORDOM “The town the automobile built” should be the name of Speedway City. A growing town of about I,ooo'population, it is famous the world over as location of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Prest-O-Lite Storage Battery Corporation. One day a year it is the hub of a revolving motor world and the other 364 days see its principal product, the Prest-O-Lite storage battery, being shipped to all parts of the world. Speedway City really owes its birth to the genius of Carl G. Fisher, millionaire Indianapolis and Florida financier and promoter, who in 1916 established the Prest-O-Lite factory across the road from the Speedway, which he, together with three other men, had built seven years before, in 1909.

Today the factory occupies 250,000 square feet of floor space, employs between 600 and 1,000 men, and produces 12,000 batteries a day. Speedway City is a model town, grown rapidly, but with a firm foundation. Fisher is the president of the Speedway Realty Company, which has aided materially in the growth of the suburb. L. H. Trotter is vicepresident and general manager. A modern school is one of the boasts of the little town. The majority of the inhabitants own their own homes and take a lively interest in the development of their village. One of the features of Speedway City is the approach to the town from the east under the turreted bridge over White river and Emrichsville. Three-quarters of a century ago an ambitious young couple, Christian and Angelica Emrich, left Bavaria to come to the United States. In the east they heard about the growing capital of Indiana and laboriously made their way here. Christian Emrich had learned the blacksmith and wagon building trade in Germany and established a shop at the crossing of two roads east of Indianapolis. Through the years that came two of his sons, Jacob and Frank, helped him in his work and the cross-roads with its blacksmith shop, inn, and

little store became known as Emrichsville. Today five grandchildren live at Emrichsville. They are Mrs. Bertha Lohrmann, Mrs. Lena Weinbrecht, Mrs. Esta Turner, Ellsworth Emrich, and John W. Emrich. Until seven years ago, a son, Jacob E. Emrich, was the patriarch of the little village which grew around the crossroads. Jacob was justice of the peace for forty years and Was a county commissioner when the present jail was planned. The Emrichsville bridge never was completed, because of litigation in 1906, but it impresses itself upon all tourists because of its peculiar construction, a reproduction of an old bridge in England. Among the businesses which have helped in the growth of Speedway City and Emrichsville are: The Speedway Realty Company, in business fifteen years; the Rainbow Cone Shoppe, Barnes Confectionery store; Miller’s Luncheonette, Rosner’s Pharmacy, also in business fifteen years; the Zinck Market; H. Owens Oil station; Speedway Cleaners, the Artificial Ice Company; the Walter Thompson poolroom and restaurant; the Speedway bank, of which A. O. Ruse is president; Helfner service station; Grande’s hardware store; the Wigwam Service station; Presto Beauty Shop; R. E. Hensen barber shop; Speedway City Coal Company, headed by D. L.
