GAS BOMBS TO CLOSE SUNDAY SHOW ORDERED Ohio Police Chief Quits Rather Than Carry Out Drastic Order. Bn Vnittd PrrDt DOVER, 0., May 26 —William E. Byers, 62, police chief here since 1924, resigned Sunday rather than carry out orders of Mayor W. R. Stucky to use tear gas bombs, if necessary, to open the projection room of the Bexley theater, which allegedly was operating in violation of the Sunday anti-motion picture law. Mayor Stucky accepted Byers’ resignation immediately and appointed Frank H. Javens as his successor. A few moments later Javens and two policemen entered the theater, removed the projection room doors and arrested the projectionist who had locked himself in. He then arrested the theater manager and. four assistants. Four Are Arrested They were: * William E. Burton, manager; William E. Pender, operator; Glenn Hiller, usher; Oscar Allman, ticket taker. They pleaded guilty and were ordered held for grand jury action under S3OO bond each. Robert Blackenhorn, assistant manager; Raymond G. Camp, operator, and Mrs. Martha Joyce, cashier, were scheduled for arraignment today. Protests Harsh Action Although the theater had been giving Sunday performances for the past ten weeks without interference, Stucky Sunday afternoon called his chief into his office and ordered him to break up the program and plac,? the management and employes under arrest. The mayor commanded Byers to cast tear bombs into the theater as a means of carrying out the order. Byers protested and when the mayor reiterated his command, the chief resigned. Two years ago a grand jury refused to take any action against theater owners who violated the Sunday closing law.

EXHIBITION OF WHALE DRAWS LARGE CROWD Moie Than 4.000 Witness Display Sunday; Car to Leave. Its stay in Indianapolis nearing an end, a whale on exhibition here Sunday exerted its entertainment ability to amuse more than 4,000 curious persons. The mammal, displayed in a special railway car at Kentucky and Oliver avenues by C. C. Rose, representative of the Pacific Whaling Company, will be transported from the city Wednesday night. The whale was captured off the California coast several months ago and was embalmed for an exhibition tour of the country. HOLDUP BRANDED HOAX Police Claim Collector, Confesses Faking Story After Losses. Elbert Isenhovver, 522’i North Illinois street, who reported to police early today he had been held up and robbed by a Negro at the Emrichsvilie bridge, later confessed that the story was a hoax, police say. He said he lost $35 belonging to the New Wrecking Company, by which he was employed as collector, and all of his own money and his watch in a craps game in the Eagle creek bottoms Sunday, and manufactured the holdup story to explain loss of the firm's funds. FREE TAX IS PROPOSED Railroad Asks to Give Service to Students in Bus Fight. Free taxi service to and from the Illinois Central railroad station will be offered Indiana university students at Bloomington, in an effort by the road to compete with bus line's. This plan was outlined in a letter to Calvin Mclntosh of the public service commission, today by Hays Hays, railroad attorneys, at Sullivan. Ind. The commission will discuss giving such permission. Mclntosh declared.

Smoke Expert Is in City to Start Survey

dj? -• IHHHGg^j^l l |

Osborn Monnett

Osborn Monnett of Chicago, nationally known smoke abatement technical expert, has started a survey in Indianapolis to precede intensive smoke-abatement work in this city dunng the next two years. Contingent upon raising of a fund of SBO,OOO for two years of smoke abatement work here, Monnett probably will be employed by the Indianapolis Smoke Abatement League as its chief technical engineer for the two-year campaign. He appointed chief smoke inspector of the city of Chicago in 1911 and over a four-year period was instrumental in formulating a code of requirements for boiler settings which has been copied widely in various cities. He has aided in educational smoke abatement campaigns in Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Minneapolis and other cities. At Salt Lake Citw he aided in the campaign which reduced smoke 95 per cent in five years. Recently he completed a survey for the city of Memphis, Tenn., and has engaged in a three-year campaign at St. Louis, Mo., where a fund of $250,000 for smoke abatement was raised and a reduction of 65 per cent was achieved in smoke during the three years.
