ROOF PROBLEM EASILY SOLVED WITH ASBESTOS Former Curio Not Affected by Climate, Heat, Cold, Fire or Moisture. Within hardly more than man’s lifetime, asbestos has been taken from among those curios that merely astonish or amuse us by their unusualness, and, by reason of its peculiar properties, has been adapted to the service of industry in more than a thousand different ways. For centuries asbestos was in the freak class. It apparently upsets many of the laws of nature. It is a nugget of rock, as heavy and dense as marble, yet upon examination it is found to be composed of silky fibers which can be carded, spun and, woven as easily as wool, flax or silk. To look at a handful of carded asbestos one would believe that it would blaze up at the touch of a lighted match, yet it resists high temperatures with no apparent change in its structure. Resists AH Forces So little has asbestos been affected by the influence of time that for untold centuries it has remained in exactly the same state as it is found today. In fact, one of the most valuable properties of this mineral is its indestructibility, which enables it to resist all the forces of disintegration, heat, cold, fire and moisture. This is the quality which renders it particularly useful as a roofing material. Wood burns; other organic materials not only burn, but disintegrate rapidly under action of the elements" Asbestos will withstand flame and high temperatures. Steel and iron rust. Asbestos is entirely immune to climatic or atmospheric conditions which will destroy a sheet of iron. Its color Is practically unchanging. Therefore as a roofing material, asbestos is ideal. Years of Experience The Henry C. Smither Roofing Company, 430 South Meridian street, gladly will advise on roofing problems, whether they be for anew home or building or for anew roof on a present home or building. They are roofing specialists with years of experience which is at the public’s command. The company applies all kinds of roofing, including built-up asphalt, rag and asbestos felt roofs, asphalt and asbestos shingles, slate and tile. For the first four months of this year, President Joseph E. Mattingly reports an increase of 20 per cent both in new roofs and in repair jobs.

Queer Method Used by Turks to Make Coffee

Originally Arabian Recipe Was Followed, Giving Frothy Potion.

Originally the Turkish method of preparing coffee was the Arabian method. Each cup is made separately. the little sauce-pan or ladle in which it is prepared, being about an inch wide and two deep; this is more than half filled with coffee, finc’-t pounded with a pestle and mortar, and then filled up with water; after being placed for a few seconds on the fire, the contents are poured or rather shaken, out (being much thicker than chocolate) without the addition of cream or sugar, into a china cup of the size and shape of half an egg-shell. Later the Turks sought to improve the method by adding sugar (a concession to the European sweet tooth) during the boiling process. The improved Turkish recipe is: First boil the water. For two cups of the beverage add three lumps of sugar and return the boiler to the fire. Add two teaspoons of powdered coffee, stirring well, and let the pot boil up four times. Between each boiling the pot is removed from the fire and the bottom tapped gently until the froth on the top subsides. After the last boiling, pour coffee first into one cup and then the other, so as to divide evenly the froth. Many automobile motor ills may be prevented by keeping the cooling system clean, according to Vern Reed, president of Reed-Mueller, Inc., auto radiator specialists, conveniently located at 111-119 Kentucky avenue. The average radiator taken from a pleasure car or truck is only'4o to 60 per cent efficient as to water flow, compared to anew radiator, tests have disclosed. This results from accumulation of grease, scale and particles of hose in the cooling system, which, if permitted to remain, not only prevents proper cooling, but also eats away the radiator, causing the zinc to become porous and beyond repair. The Reed-Muller shop has developed a highly efficient method of cleaning radiators, which, used with the R. and M. solution, thoroughly cleans the radiator and cooling system without damage. This guarantee cure for overheating motors can be effected without removing the motor, in a short time. • In addition to making general radiator repairs, the firm carries a complete stock of radiators and cores for every make of automobile and maintains a pickup and delivery service for garages and repair shops.
