CHOOSE YOUR’ POISON; TARIFF LETS YOU DO IT Arsenic and Tannic Acid, at Least, Will Be Free in ‘Robber’ Bill. BY MRS. BILL “Well, anyway, they leave us two poisons we can take when this new tail! gets into effect,” Bill said as he turned the pages of the 1930 tariff bill schedule. Me, I’m Just Bill’s wife, so naturally I don’t say a word. “Yeh,” Bill continues, “it’s kind of tough. If we want to put on high hat, we’ve got to pay for it, I see. For instance, here's opera hats listed for a tariff of $2 each, plus 75 per cent. “Old Man Rockerbilt will have to wear that soft hat of his. That’s going to cost him. too, for there’s a duty of 40 per cent here." I lost Bill’s review of the next page, for I smelled my cake burning and rushed to the kitchen. Things like that don’t faze Bill, though, and he was going strong when I returned to the room. “ yes, sir, sure going to be hard for the fiddlers,” he said. “Chin rests for ioiins are quoted at 60 per cent duty.' “Here’s a nice one,” he laughed. “They’re going to let us bring all the game and birds shot in foreign countries into this country free of

Punishment i!u I'vitrrf Pm* EDGARTOWN, Mass., May 16.—As the sole inmate of the county jail here, Edward Tracy is deprived of nothing except his liberty. Books, magazines, cigars, cigarettes, a radio, flowers and an easy chair combine to make life pleasant for the lone prisoner. Once a day, a keeper takes Tracy for a stroll through the village streets.
duty. But they charge us duty of $lO each plus 45 per cent for our shotguns. “Guess I’ll have to go to Canada hunting next year. It’ll be cheaper to buy my gun up there, shoot my birds, and bring them down. Can’t bring back any live ones, though, for the bjill says 10 cents a pound duty. “When* a chicken an egg? That’s a question. Here s 11 cents a pound duty on eggs with only 10 cents a pound on chickens. Maybe, at that, it’d be cheaper to import the chickens in concentrated form in eggs, instead of depending on the chickens to lay the eggs after you get them into the country. “Ho, hum! Just some more grief. It says here sauerkraut will cost 50 per cent duty. That’s no hardship, though, for who wants sauerkraut without a stein of suds? “Guess they think this will pep us all up. There’s no tariff on pepper or spices. That's a hot one. “You can have diamohds, too, honey. They’re free of duty. Don’t know as that’ll help us, though. “Well, anyway, arsenic and nitric acid are free. That's a relief if it gets too hard.”

SENATE'S BILL BOOSTS FUNDS ON WATERWAYS Measure Is Reported by Committee; 125 Millions Provided for Work. Bu Tnitrri Pre** WASHINGTON, May 23.—An expanded rivers and harbors bill carrying appropriations of $125,000,000, or $14,000,000 more than was provided by the house, awaited action in the senate today. Within its broad provisions are included authorizations for waterway and port projects in virtually every section of the nation. Most of the measure’s controversial items were ironed out by the senate commerce committee, which reported it late Thursday. A fight may develop in the senate over a provision giving the war department jurisdiction over the amount of water to be diverted from the Creat Lakes for the Illinois waterway, which the bill provides the government shall acquire and s pend $7,500,000 to improve. The measure did not fix the amount of water to be diverted from the lakes, but directed that enough be diverted to provide a “useful waterway” from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi river without interfering with navigation on the Grea' Lakes.
