LINER’S VOYAGE STARTS RATTLE AMONGNOBILITY Lafayette’s Descendants by Blood Angered Over ‘Usurpation.’ BY RALPH HEIN ZEN L'niied Prea, Staff Correapoudent PARIS, May 22.—The maiden voyage of the new liner Lafayette has caused ill feeling among the great-great-grandchildren of the Marquis De La Fayette. The Chambruns are aroused over what they term usurpation of the spotlight by Lineal, but not blood, descendants, the Dampierres. The S. S. Lafayette, with the Dampierres aboard, wa.- bound for New York today, nue to arrive Sunday. The French government, seeking to make the maiden voyage of the liner impressive, invited the multitude of Lafayette descendants to make the trip as guests. The Chambruns, among the last direct blood descendants of Lafayette. who trace their parentage directly through the hero’s daughter, Virginia, aii. were too occupied with national duties, so the house of Dampierre.! sent official representatives on the mission. Not Blood Descendants Now the Chambruns are angry with the Dampierres anc point out that the emissaries on the liner are not real blood descendants at all, but can trace their lineage only through one of the general’s four sisters-in-law, the Marquise de Montagu. History students hastened to their flics and looked up the family tree, and it is there in black and white that the Chambruns are right. The Dampierres who now are in mid-sea, only are “in-laws” of the general, sort of great-great-grand nieces and nephews. The representatives, who sailed on the Lafayette from Havre last Saturday are Jacques, Marquis Dampierre, the sixth in line, and the marquis, their son, Count Armande de Dampierre and the Countess de Dampierre. Brothers Closest The four closest descendants by a direct line from Lafayette are the three Chambrun brothers, Marquis Pierre de Chambrun, a member of the French chamber of deputies; Count Charles de Chambrun. ambassador of France in Angora; Count Aldebert de Chambrun, a general in the French army in Africa, who married Nicholas Longworth’s sister Clara of Cincinnati, and their sister, Countess Savergnan de Brazza. The Dampierres. however, are bv no means an upstart family. In fact they can trace their family tree back to fables which would have brought them to France with the Norsemen, and these early founders gave the name to the village of Dampierre on the Normandy coast of France near Dieppe. A branch of the family became American by going to the Antilles between 1635 and 1780, settling in Guadeloupe, where a village still bears their name. Pierre Francois de Dampierre, officer of the Foix regiment, fought all through the American revolution. He was a lieutenant in the Battle of Savannah and a captain at Yorktown.
