HUNT BOMBER KING Employe Is Caught in Act of Plying Trade. Bu United Press CHICAGO, May 19.—The capture of a professional bomber in the act of plying his trade caused state’s attorney detectives to concentrate today on a search that is hoped eventually to break up one of the most dreaded “protective association” rackets in Chicago. At the rear of a North Clark street coffee shop a squad of investigators caught Frank R. Phillips early Sunday as he ignited the fuse of a bomb. Phillips told an amazing story of his career and admitted two other bombings. Detectives started search for his employer, whom he knew only as “The Greek.” “The Greek” was identified by proprietors of North Clark street eating places as the head of a hacketeering “restaurants’ protective association,” who exacted contributions from the restaurant men by threatening their places with bombing.

CHANGE IN CITY PAVING SPECIFICATIONS URGED Use of Kentucky Rock Asphalt Is Proposed, No immediate street paving specifications change to permit use of Kentucky Rock asphalt is contemplated by the city administration, A. H. Moore, city engineer, said today. Substitution of the Kentucky Rock for brick as a paving material would not bring about reduction in cost or improve character and durability of pavements, Moore said. “Most of the materials now specified are made in Indianapolis or Indiana. Other products under consideration are manufactured outside of Indiana and furnished by other than Indiana firms,” Moore declared.

The “home" of the mammonth whale being shown here.
The sixty-eight-ton whale being exhibited throughout the country by the Pacific Whaling Company, arrived in Indianapolis today for the nine-day local exhibition, which will open Tuesday. The mammal will be displayed at Kentucky and Oliver avenues, in a specially built, glass-inclosed railway car, said to be the longest in the world. The car is seventy-two feet in length. Special features will be arranged during the local showing, which will end May 28. School children will be guests at the exhibition. The whale was captured off the California coast recently in one of the hardest fought battles in the history of Pacific ocean whaling. The battle with the mammal nearly cost the lives of a whaler crew. Special lectures will be given by Captain Harley Tyler, for many years a figure in Pacific whaling. Tyler will explain the processes used in preparing the whale’s carcass for commercial purposes and also will relate many stories of his experiences in his life at sea.

GUSHER IS UNTAMED ‘Wild’ Oil Well Flows On Unchecked Three Days. Bu United Press OKLAHOMA CITY, May 19.—A golden plume of oil continued to shoot skyward in the South City oil field here today, roaring defiance to the efforts of begrimed workers who have fought three days to curb its flow. It appeared today that the wild gusher—the No. 1 Sigmon—would run wild for several days, before the specially constructed mastergate can be lowered over the mouth of the well. The flow of the runaway was said to exceed that of the Mary Sudik well, which ran wild for eleven days. A woman must be 30 years old to vote in England.

a handful of earth of took a stone from the graves of their war dead. Special permission was granted Mrs. Nora Marshbum of Washington, D. C., to spend Tuesday at Dunkirk, where her son Djalma was drowned in a seaplane while on patrol duty and his body, washed ashore, was buried in the Somme cemetery. “A few minutes at his grave will be enough,” Mrs. Marshburn said. “I prefer to see where he lived and was happy and where he wrote thrilling letters. Another of her sons, Errol, was disabled in the war. Mrs. Ada Yerges of Columbus, 0., appeared to be the most active pacifist of the group of visitors. She urged that toy shops quit selling war-like games. Many of the mothers, however, appeared to be satisfied that their sons had fought for an heroic cause. “I would let all of my men folk go again if it were necessary,” said Mrs. Ada Brown of Winter Garden, Fla., who is the mother of fourteen. The same attitude was expressed by Mrs. Lucy Lawrence, 72, of Owensboro, Ky., whose husband was a captain in the Civil war and whose son Armsted was killed at the Argonne. Geologists say that man has existed on the earth from 100,000 to 1,500,000 years.
