HINDUS STAGE MONSTER RAID ON SALT DEPOT Gandhi’s Followers Swoop Down on Works; 415 Are Arrested. BY WEBB MILLER United Press Staff Correspondent (World Copyright. IG3O. bv United Press) WADALA, Bombay Presidency, India, May 19.—Mahatma Gandhi’s method of harassing the government of India, attempting to arouse the nation to non-vlolent resistance to British rule, was given an effective demonstration here Sunday when some 500 of his followers made a monster raid on the Wadala salt works. The raid was the largest made in India since Gandhi, now in prison, began his passive resistance campaign for self-government. The volunteers, clad in khaki-colored shirts and wearing brass epaulets with the words “National Volunteers” on them, rushed into the works and seized handfuls and hatfuls of salt from large heaps drying in the sun. Probably less than 100 pounds of salt was seized by the raiders. Its most important feature, however, was its success as a gesture of defiance. Seven Are Injured National congress headquarters announced later in the day that 415 volunteers were arrested in connection with the raids and that seven were injured. The raid caused great excitement at national congress headquarters, drawing into its courtyard hundreds of Gandhi’s followers, planning anew raid for today. It was said at the headquarters that 100 men would be sent to renew the raid each day this week, with a great mass meeting next Sunday. Beventy-two more volunteers were arrested today when a group of 150 rushed the salt pans from six different directions. The remaining volunteers in the party slipped past the British police and fled to safety. The Wadala salt pans cover an area about a mile square, lying in a valley near the factory. The suburb consists of shallow depressions into which sea water is admitted from the nearby bay, and salt obtained by the simple method of permitting this water to evaporate in the blazing sun. Tight Cordon Impossibility Owing to the extent of the salt pans, the police were not able to place a tight cordon around the area. The volunteers, dividing into groups of twenty-five or fifty, chose points at which the police line was thinnest. Their method of raiding was to rush the line individually. The police then would pursue the raiders, arresting them the minute they seized a flrstful of salt. This game went on throughout the forenoon as thousands of spectators and sympathizers, dressed in undyed homespun smocks and Gandhi peaked capes, crowded the hilltops. They excitedly yelled encouragement as a volunteer made a dash for the salt, cheering every sortie. The raiders were marched back to waiting police vans and started for jail. The Sunday throng from Bombay and vicinity out to watch the raid laughed with glee at the efforts of the perspiring, portly British sergeants running on the marshy salt pans in the blazing sun, sinking ankle deep in the muck. ESTIMATE POPULATION OF CITY AT 359,594 Employ School Increase Ratio to Figure Indianapolis Citizens. Employing the ratio of increase that marked Indianapolis’ school population between 1920 and 1930, the city’s population today should approximate 359,594, it was indicated today. Official enumeration of four of the city’s fifteen wards remains to be completed. However, an unofficial estimate was afforded today by comparison of school enumeration figures which were 37,447 in 1920 and 42.585 this year. With the city's official population standing at 314.194 in 1920, the same ratio of increase would make the 1930 population 359,594. EXPECT DELAY ON ORDINANCE REPEAL Final Settlement of Differences Holds Up Council Action. Further delay on the ordinance repealing the ban on cemeteries within 1.000 feet of a boulevard was expected to be asked tonight by city council’s law and judiciary committee pending final settlement of differences between the park board and the Indianapolis Memorial park. City council is expected to approve the contract for steam heating of city hall and the agreement with Carl H. Bauer to construct benches on sidewalks in suburban business sections. Bu United Pre *s WASHINGTON, May 19.—1n an attempt to bring the happenings of the great outside world to isolated peoples and to determine whether such contact with ideas will bring a desire foi; formal education, the interior department has placed radio sets in ten mountain homes, it announced today. j. “Many of these homes can be reached only by mule trails and foot paths,” the department said. “In some of them live persons who never saw a railroad train, an automobile or an airplane. “Will such folks enjoy listening to a man who has flown over the north and south poles. “What programs will they enjoy most, and how will such programs affect them, educationally?” Educators will supervise the experiment and seek to determine what type of program will do most to give knowledge and culture to those who never have attended school.
