CLEAR KOHLER IN WISCONSIN OUSTER TRIAL Jurors Find Governor Is Not Guilty in Corrupt Practices Case. Bu United Prc* SHEBOYGAN, Wis., May 16. The triumph of vindication was Governor Walter J. Kohler’s today in consequence of a jury's verdict finding him not guilty of alleged violations of the Wisconsin corrupt practices act. His trial, in which his removal from office was sought on charges of excessive campaign expenditures in the 1928 primary election, was brought to an end Thursday night when he was acquitted. The jury's deliberations lasted only an hour and a half and the verdict was unanimous on one ballot. Ask for New Trial The state’s special prosecutors met the defeat by turning today to the task of preparing a motion for anew trial of the ouster suit, judgment on which will be made final by Judge Gustav Gehrz within the next several days, when he decides whether the jury’s verdict is to be upheld or overruled. An appeal is to be taken to the state supreme court, it was announced, in event the verdict is sustained. The historic trial, the first attempt of its kind in the United States to remove a Governor from office other than by impeachment, was started nearly a month ago. It was based on a complaint brought by La Follette progressive Republicans. Testimony Limited When it opened its case, the state endeavored to show that almost SIOO,OOO had been spent on Kohler’s campaign. Court rulings later compelled the prosecution to confine its evidence to only those expenditures it might prove were made directly by the Governor or his authorized agents. “My expenditures were well within the $4,000 limit prescribed by law,” said the Governor.
