CHARGE CLOSING OF ROAD TO BE BUSINESS BLOW National Highway Property Holders Ask State to Avoid Detouring. Assertion that numerous small businesses on the National road, west of the city near Lynhurst drive, will b? wiped cut by an ‘ unnecessary closing of the road by the st'tte highway department, was made today by C. D. Hereth, who Thursday presented to state highway officials a petition to abrogate the road closing. The petition tfas signed by sixty property holders of the vicinity. It set out that the signers "emphatically protest against the detouring of through traffic from this road until such time as Is absolutely necessary.” Under the present detour, traffic Is routed on the Rockville road and mums to the National highway at Mariori-Hendricks county line. The National road is being widened frem its present width of 18 feet to 40 feet. Hereth contends that traffic should be routed through on National foad while construction is being done on the sides. His plan would be to install the detour at Morris street to the county road as far as Plainfield. The contractor, the Vogsl company of Indianapolis, would have to keep the detour over gravel roads in condition, he contends. A. H. Hinkle, mantenance chief

!of the state highway department, I declared that the state must keep | the detours in condition and to ! adopt the Hererth plan would be both costly and inconvenient. "Detouring over the Rockville road gives the motorist an unobstructed pavement.” he declared. "Returning on the county line road there is a dustless surface. Marion county agreed to put the base on th's detour if we furnished the surI facing, which was done. “The other route would be almost Impassable because of the dust this summer and it would be dangerous for traffic to attempt traveling on an eighteen-foot pavement w'ith work be ng done on both sides. “I .sympathize with these business people, but such conditions are in- : evitable wherever a road is under j construction. Hereth is proprietor of a res- ; raurant end declares that his busii ness will be reduced to almost I nothing under the present detour ‘ arrangement. Highway officials indicated that ' there Is likely to be no change in the detour arrangement, however. SPEAKER SUGGESTS STUDY OF MARKETS Thorough Survey of Territory for Advertising Is Advised. ‘‘Study your markets.” This was the advice pf C. E. Knepper, president of Emerson B. Knight, Inc., to advertisers in an address at the luncheon of the Advertising Club Thursday in the Columbia Club. "Advertise wisely after a survey has been made. There is only so much money in any given territory. See what people want to buy and how much they are able to buy,” he urged. Election of officers of the club 1 will be held May 29.
