DISSENSION IN PASSION PLAY RANKS DENIED Oberammcrgau Mayor Says Bankruptcy, Modernism Reports Are False. fly I nil■ •! /V. OBERAMMERGAU. Eavaria. May 14 Sensational reports publ.shed principally in the English press that Oberammergau is‘facing bankruptcy and might, an a result, be forced to suspend the Passion Play, and that this quiet little Bavarian village is split into two hostile camps over the question of modernizing the miracle drama, are denied emphatically by Mayor Hans Mayr. According to one of these reports, the Passion Play, which began its 1530 production last Sunday, must show a clear profit of more than 3,000,000 marks or else the village will be crushed with a debt of staggering proportions. Another said that the ‘modernists." led by Georg Lang, director of this year s presentation, had won a signal victory over the forces of tradition in that they had brought about the construction of a modernistic theater. A third report asserted that Anton Lang had been retired from the role of Chrilus because he was too “sickly and sentimental.’’ Source of Danger Other reports have dealt with smoldering jealousy, unexplained feuds and intrigues in the Passion Play village. In discussing this situation. Herr Mayr. who plays the part of Herod, took up the various points one by one. “The theater has not been rebuilt and anew stage constructed because of a desire to bring about any new development in dramatic art or for the purpose of adopting anew technique in the production of the play,” he asserted. “Hut solely because the old stage was no longer usable and because the old dressing rooms actually were an extreme source of danger in case of fire.” He said the peril now had been removed with the erection of a fireproof stage and the rebt ilding of the theater proper. Herr Mayr admitted that the village of Oberammcrgau was forced to borrow money for this year’s performance, “principally because the profits of the last performance i1922). had been wiped out in the inflation.” Enmity Is Denied The sum borrowed, he said, “amounts only to 1,500,000 marks,” ad-’ing that the loan was well secured and would be sufficient to care for all the expenses of the Passion Play. "That there could be no speculation on the attendance of foreigners,” he declared, ”is shown by the attendance statistics of past years. In 1922 the number of guests totaled 320,000, whereof 80,000 were from countries outside Germany. In 1910 tickets sold totaled 220,000, of which numbers 60,000 were bought by foreigners. Thus residents of this country have been supporting the Passion Play.” Herr Mayr swept aside with an impatient gesture the contention that jealousy, intrigue or feuds were rampant in the village.' “There is no enmity whatever between Anton Lang and Alois Lang,” he said. "Alois Lang is the new Christus. Anton, the mayor continued. “was retired solely because of his age. He now is in his fiftysixth year. It was impractical for him to continue in a role that requires a 30-year-old Christus.” Germans have developed a farm tractor powered with a Diesel motor in which almost any kind of heavy oil can be used for fuel.

COLORADO MAY I SEE OLD DAYS OF COLD RUSH Second Contract to Spur Work Signed by Widow of ’Leadville Johnny.’ U>/ t nit > ft {'rets PARIS, May 14.—Exploitation of the Fairplay virgin gold claims Colorado will mean a return of the gold rush days of the late 90s, Mrs. J. J. Brown, widow of Leadville | Johnny Brown, predicted today as she prepared to sign contracts for ■ the development of the second great ( basin she has arranged to operate. A month ago Mrs. Brown con- : tracted with a group of Arizona and Montana copper miners to start op- , erations on an equal share basis in ! the famous Omega gold basin, near j Leadville, on claims staked out a quarter of a century ago by her husband. but never prospected. That first field estimated to hide $100,000,000 worth of gold, and the new area, a continuation of the veins of the Omega group, is estimated by geologists to contain half that amount. The two areas are ten miles apart. “The contracts call for the start of work immediately,” Mrs. Brown said. “I am glad for Colorado that busy scenes will be restored to the gold region. The empire builders have all passed away and there was none to take their places, but I know something about mining and I hope to see these old claims make Colorado more prosperous than ever.” Mrs. Brown said she intended to devote a portion of her profits from the new mining operations to the endowment of the Eugene Fields' memorial, which she started.
