HEROISM TALES RELATED AFTER QUAKEjN INDIA Prisoners Helped Firemen; 1,000 Believed Dead in Ruins of City. Bv United Prrta RANGOON, Burma, May 9.—The ancient city of Pegu, once the powerful capital of the kingdom of Pegu was in ruins from Monday’s fire and earthquake when a United Press correspondent visited it today. More than 1,000 persons of the 14,000 population were estimated dead. It was believed hundreds still were buried beneath the debris of old buildings which has not been cleared away. Deeds of heroism, cowardice and greed were told as survivors recounted the hours when the whole city seemed to rise and fall, then burst out in flames. Doors of the Pegu jail were thrown open when the fire broke out, and the inmates were paroled to aid the firemen. They fought the flames for hours, and later, when the roll was called, not one was missing. Two hundred in an audience were crushed to death when a moving picture house collapsed. Many others were drowned when, panic-stricken, they leaped into a nearby creek, to avoid the sickening rise and fall of the earth. A gang of looters, eagerly intent on collecting precious oriental stones from the fallen' buildings, was driven off successfully by British officers. Jewel-studded pagodas, temples of the Buddhists, were shaken down, and the priests deposited their precious stones with the British authorities for safekeeping. Among them was the $1,250,000 weather vane on top of the chief Buddhist pagoda at Pegu. GOLD STAR MOTHERS WILL HONOR SAILORS Wreath to Be Dropped in Sea as Tribute to War Victims.
