‘FLEET'S IN!’ CRY RESOUNDS ON BROADWAY tL S. Squadrons of Two Seas in Gotham Harbor for Holiday. BY HARRY FERGUSON United Prrs? Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, May 7. While diplomats of five nations were working to build and scrap vessels on paper, the massed American fleets of the Atlantic and Pacific f.teamed into New York harbor today to make another kind ot naval holiday. Up from the warm waters of the Caribbean swarmed three-score fighting craft—battleships, cruisers, destroyers and submarines—from one of the mightiest concentrations ever held by the United States navy. Months at Sea The mighty California flying the four-starred flag of Admiral L. M. Nulton, left Ambrose light scon after dawn, heading the procession into New York harbor, where shore leave awaited the men of the fleet after months on the high seas. The air was bright With signal flags as the battleships edged into the narrows and l°ft Sandy Hook astern. Stubby, puffing tugs opened their sirens, and from somewhere out of the morning mist cam" the salute of a sunrise gun. At the head of the cruisers came the lean, speedy Detroit, followed in scouting formation by the Milwaukee, Trenton. Memphis, Marblehead, Raleigh, Richmond and Salt Lake City. Under half-steam, they thrust their prows into the wake of the battle fleet. Behind steamed the destroyers and submarines, converging on the mouth of the Hudson river where the fleet will rest at anchor. Planes Form Escort Overhead,, .the orange wings of a monoplane dipped close to the sea in salute—the vanguard of 140 battle planes that are flying up from the south to greet the navy. All morning the gray bows of the fleet nudged into piers in the harbor until all the might of the United States navy was strung from Yonkers to Staten Island. And from the parapets of Riverside drive down to the canyons of Broadway, through which 30,000 tars will flock on shore leave tonight, ran the eternal welcoming cry of land lubbers: 'The fleet’s in!” ‘BULL IN CHINA SHOP’ SCENE IS ENACTED Runaway Steer Wrecks Tailoring Store on Broadway. Bu 1 nil'll Prets NEW YORK, May 7.—Malcolm Eartanian surveyed the ruins today of what had been an excellent tailor shop—until a large, angry steer passed through it on a little expedition down Broadway Tuesday, followed by a crowd of Times Square cowboys and stockyard employees. The steer finally was killed in the best wild west manner. The steer, breaking loose at Thirty-ninth street and Hudson river, led his pursuers across town, down Broadway, and back across Twenty-sixth street, dashing through traffic jams. He went in yie front door of Bartanian's tailor shop on East Twenty-sixth street, tipped over sewing machines, a steam pressor and tables, and went out through a large mirror and a plate glass window. ROOSEVELT U. S. BOUND Porto Rico Governor Flies to See Hoover on Island Needs. Bn l nited Pres s SAN JUAN. Porto Rico, May 7.
