B : l T nitrif Press • NEW YORK, May 6—The first toman to declare war on gangster racketee s has taken the field determineu to wipe out the laundry “racket'* in Brooiclyn. Mrs. Rosaiie Loew Whitney, a founder of the National Women’s Republican Club, and prominent in political and civic affairs, has accepted the offer of the Neighborhood Laundry Owners’ Association of Brooklyn, an organization compromising 95 per cent of Brooklyn laundries. To act as its dictator in its fight to wipe out the "racket” which has been costing it $300,000 a year for "protection.” Mrs. Whitney, a lawyer and one of the first women to be admitted to the New York bar, said her investigation showed laundrymen who refused to pay were threatened, lost their laundry and suffered mishaps to and their trucks overturned and destroyed. She charged they had not had sufficient protection from police. "I propose to end this business of racketeering,” Mrs. Whitney said. "The fight of the laundry trades is a first step in the community’s fight against a nefarious system which has been preying on the country It is the obligation of every citizen only because of the public’s lethargy, to enlist in the crusade.” Mrs. Whitney is serving without pay. WORK ORDERED ON 13STREETS Two to Be Widened and 11 Given New Surfaces. Approval of plans for resurfacing and widening of two streets /and resurfacing of eleven others this summer was made Monday by the board of works. The board received bids for the construction of runways at the municipal airport. The R. McCallem Construction Company, Danville, 111., bid low on the job at SIBO,OOO. The streets to be widened and resurfaced are Eleventh street from Capitol avenue to Delaware street and Pratt street from Illinois street to Pennsylvania street. Streets to be resurfaced are: McCarty street, from Alabama street to Virginia avenue; Illinois street, from Twenty-eighth to Thirty-fourth street; Blake street, from Washington to New York street; South street, from Alabama to Senate avenue; Twentieth street, from Talbott street to Bellefontaine street; Fifteenth street, from Illinois street to Senate avenue; St. Clair street, from Massachusetts avenue to New York Central railroad tracks; Vermont street, from West street to Bright street; Pratt street, from Illinois street to Capitol avenue; Pratt street, from Pennsylvania street to Delaware street, and Fourteenth street, from Senate avenue to Illinois street. them today were left many injured and homeless in areas laid waste. Two deaths were reported and ten were known to be injured. Early Monday night a tornado struck farming communities near Walters, in southwestern Oklahoma. Later, a tornado struck a farming community near Watonga. Two were killed. The storm cut a path ten miles long and ranging from a half mile to a mile in width. It split near the village of Greenfield, and exhausted itself east of there. Ten farmers in Nebraska were heavy losers because of the tornado
which swept south central sections of the state. Many living in Adams county near Hastings, suffered losses.
