\ ancc to Face Cubs in Opener Brooklyn Hopes to Annex Eighth Straight Win; Giants on Top. I!'I I w P-,** NEW YORK. May 6.—Confident that Dnzzv Van£e still weilds his •jinx” over the Chicago Cubs, the Brooklyn Rr bins today hoped to climb into third place in the National League pennant race. The Robins, current sensation of the league, have won seven confeeurive games, climbing from last to fourth i ' ice. Manager Wilbert Robinson planned to send Vance, ancient Cubs Nemesis against the Chicagoans today in an attempt to extend the record and tie the Washington Senators for the longest winning streak of the year. With New York and Pittsburgh fighting among themselves for the lead, both the Robins and Cubs have an opportunity to gain on the leaders by making a sweep of their present three game series. In the American League the Philadelphia Athletics have climbed back into a tie for first place with Cleveland, and hope to take undisputed possession of the lead during their current series with the St. Louis Browns, while the Indians are mixing with the climbing Yankees. The New York Giants moved into first place in the National League Monday, taking the first of a fourgame series from Pittsburgh, 9 to 1. Bill Walker held the Pirates to six hits and aided the Giants scoring with a home run with the bases full. Granthams ninth inning homer scored the only Pirate run. Four homo runs gave Ihc Philadelphia Alhlrtir* a twelve-innin* t lo 3 victory over St. I.ouis and a tie for the American lead A1 Simmons, first up in the twelfth, drove the ball into the bleachers for the deriding score. Two homers hv Boley and one by Mule Haas accounted for the Athletics’ other scores. Boston's Red Sox pounded four Cleveland pitchers for twenty-three n.ts and an 18 to 3 victory, ending the Indians sixgame winning streak. Jonah Goldman, the Indians light hitting rookie shortstop turned in the game's only home run. Chief Hogsett, Detroit’s fullblooded Indian rookie, pitched his third victory of the season, beating the Washington Senators, 3 to 1. He failed to last, however. Errors by Freddy Maguire gave the Cincinnati Reds six unearned runs and a 10-to-fi win over the Boston Braves. Rookie outfeldrr Walter Ilerger drove in three of the Braves’ runs with a homer. Vernon Gomez. SO-vear-old rookie lefthander. made his major league debut bv hurling the New York Yankees to their t!i;:,i traight win over Chicago White Sox. 4 to 1 Willie Kamm scored the Sox’s on'v run with a homer In the second.
