RELIGION MUST GO, PROFESSOR TELLSSAVANTS New Universal Faith That Is Attuned to Modern Minds Advocated. BY BOYD LEWIS UnilH Prm Staff Correnpondent NEW HAVEN, Conn., Msy I. A white-haired professor today attacked current religious beliefs as shameful reactionary and irrelevant and advocated anew universal faith—“attuned to the modern mind”—which he calls Prometheanism. The prophet of Prometheanism Is William P. Montague, 56, professor of philosophy at Columbia university, one-time president of the American Philosophical Society and savant of international repute. Professor Montague introduced his theory in the Terry lectures which he delivered before the Yale divinity school convocation here this w'-ek, creating intense interest among the theologians. “Religion must go,” said Professor Montague, “with the increasing perfection of life through man's own devices, religion, with its negations and compulsions and outgrown mythology is coming to seem unnecessary. ‘Fear and sorrow, which drove primitive man to the solace of a mystical belief no longer are the themes of our more serious culture. “Achievement of the fullest life,” the professor explained, is the object of Prometheanism, which derives its name from tne legendary Greek Prometheus who defied the gods and thus became a symbol of individualism. self-potentiality and will—the keynotes of the new faith. “In its essence, Prometheanism is pure anarchy, with all living in love and peace liberty.” "Christ’s teaching puts the most

high glory within the reach of the most lowly. This is, it seems to me, almost all that matters in Christian ethics. To have discovered and proclaimed the way of absolute beauty—and died terribly as a supreme exemplification of his own teaching is enough for a Son of God born of a woman. “For as to try to better the picture by ornamenting its frame -with biological and psychological anomalies, such as a virgin birth and a miraculous absence of all sin and all ignorance, verges on the ridiculous.” Civilized life reached its first stages in 5.000 B. C., soon after disappearance of the Ice Age.
