In the Cotton Market
(Bv Thomson & McKinnon NEW YORK, April 25.—Brokers for the farm board came into ownership of about one-quarter of a million bales of cotton this morning. This removes all uncertainty in the situation and we will watch with interest their efforts to market their holdings. The market was nervous and at one time 20 points lower, with early trading, but the loss was largely due to selling on some relief in the west, where some rains occurred, but not, in our opinion, sufficient to relieve the drouthy conditions prevailing in that territory. Dry goods are said to be showing a harder tendency as a result of further curtailment of manufacture. Asa trading proposition July looks like a good purchase on breaks, regardless of trade conditions, its price being more or less assured by the co-operative holdings. The new crops are not apt to decline to any extent. First, there is some strength in sympathy with the July position, ar*d then there is the prospect that after tomorrow the west will show clearing weather. NEW ORLEANS High. Low. Close. CROP REPORTS SEND FUTURES MARKET DOWN Foreign Trade Eases Off on North American Weather. Bit United Press CHICAGO, April 25. Wheat closed sharply lower on the Board of Trade today when rain reports from a number of points in Kansas and Oklahoma, as well as Texas, and much lower cables from Liverpool caused sentiment to turn bearish. There was a small rally from the low points late in the session, after May liquidation had set anew low on the crop for that month. Com was off sharply with wheat, but oats was only fractionally down. At the close wheat was 1% cents lower, corn was % cent to % cent lower and oats was % cent to Vz cent lower. Provisions were weak. Liverpool showed no signs of a recovery and closed 2to 2 : ’& cents lower. Buenos Aires at mid-day was unchanged to Vi cent higher. Trading was very active during the morning with much changing in all positions. The forecast for showers over most of the belt further depressed sentiment. Cash prices were 1 cent lower. Receipts were thirtyeight cars. Corn was under the influence of wheat and prices were considerably lower just before noon with support very indifferent. Local shipments to go east were at the high market of 285,000 bushels in the morning, but the larger receipts, freer country offerings and weakness in wheat offset this. Cash prices were % to 1 cent lower. Receipts were 234 cars. There was much transferring in oats with May being sold and the deferred deliveries bought. The early advance in the deferred deliveries as a result of this was taken as a spot for profit-taking and all prices fell below the previous close. Cash prices were V* cent lower. Receiptr, were twenty-nine cars.
