W. C. T. U. SAYS 1 LIQUOR CURES ON DECREASE Conducts Own Survey After Keeley Figures Show Bad Situation. flw f m ifrtl pr<** EVANSTON, 111., April 23.—Publication ol figures showing that the number of patients in the Keeley Institute at Dwight, 111., had been increasing in the last few years, caused the Woman's Christian Temperance Union to make a survey from the national headquarters here of such institutions over the country. The organization found that of ; 148 institutions for treatment of inebriates operating before prohi- 1 bition went into effect, eighty-nine reported definitely that they went out of business with prohibition and fourteen could not be found by postal authorities. Increase Started Commenting on the survey, J. H. Oughton. president of the Keeley Institute, told the United Press that there was a marked decline in the number of patients beginning m 1917 because of the war, but in 1920 the number started increasing sund has continued to do so. The figures he gave as to the number of patients- follow: 3920 .... 18fi 1925 407 J 921 289 1926 454 1922 ....312 1927 571 1923 391 1928 753 1924 350 1929 784 "For the three months this year,' Dr. Oughton said, “there has been a marked increase over the number treated in the first three months of 1929. We believe we will treat more patients this year than we did last year, despite the business depression.’* Average Is Lower - The W. C. T. U. declared that the average number of patients in the Keeley institute in the ‘‘wet” years was 787 and the average in the “dry” years w-as 484, from the figures up to 1928. .. “The Dwight institute today attends to drunk cure business of a j much wider territory where many of the 'gold cures’ have closed,” the W. C. T. U. statement said. ‘‘Formerly the country was dotted with liquor cures. Now the chain of Neal Institutes and the Gatling chain of drunkard hospitals lipve Closed.” All raw materials for engineering work come from three sources—the farm, the forest, and the mine.
