CITY FLIERS TO BE GUESTS AT N, UIR FETE Cook, Shank Invited to Banquet in Honor of Mail Pilots. Two veteran Indianapolis airmen, H. Weir Cook, general manager of the Curtiss-Wright Flying Service of Indiana, and Bob Shank, Hoosier airport president, both former air mail pilots, were among several hundrd air mail pilots and former air mail pilots who received invitations today to attend a celebration in their honor at the New York air show May 5. Postmaster General Walter T. Brown will head the celebration paying tribute to the men who paved the way for commercial aviation as pioneers in the United States air mail service. It is probable that Cook and Shank will attend the show, they stated today. Shank was one of the first quartet of air mail pilots carrying mail under the postofflce department when the air mail was inaugurated in 1918. He piloted the plane on the first official air mail run from Mew York to Washington on Aug. 6, 1918, when Max Miller, another member of the original quartet, left Washington with New' York mail at the same time. Shank is the only surviving member of the quartet, which included Morris A. Newton and Edward B. Gardner. New’ton died a natural death and Miller and Gardner were killed in airplane accidents a number of years ago. Captain Cook saw air mail service when it first was extended westward in 1920 as a pilot on the transcontinental lines between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Cheyenne, Wvo.
