authorized by Curtis, is understood to be his answer to reports that Postmaster-General Walter F. Brown was at least a passive candidate for second honors. The Brookhart patronage committee has received evidence that certain postoffice employes In the south have been active in Brown’s behalf, and this Information recently was turned over to Curtis himself. In fact, Chairman Brookhart offered to take the matter up on the floor, but is said to have been dissuaded by the Vice-President. In the event Brookhart asks for anew committee to investigate reports that Brown has been dickering with southern elements ousted from party control by President Hoover, Curtis would be called upon to name the investigators. Because of the possible embarrassment, no action has been taken either by Brookhart or Curtis. Despite Curtis’ attitude about 1932, and his age—he now is 70 years old—it is known his friends
would protest against any attempt to shelve him for Brown, or any other Individual closer to the administration. Brown himself, as a matter of fact, repudiated efforts that may have been made to work up interest in his candidacy. Nevertheless, the situation has caused some discomfiture for both the cabinet members and the VicePresident, as discussion of renomination of the Vice-President is unusual so early In the political season. Bristow, Texas mining engineer, were made by American officials here today upon receipt of advices that the ransomed kidnap victim probably w'ould arrive Friday. Except for the brief messages re-
veallng Bristow was in good health, heavily bearded and longing for some American chewing tobacco, there was little information in tho hands of the United States consulate concerning his adventures in the mountainous regions of Nayarit and Queretaro during the four weeks he was held captive by bandits. Gordon Obie Bristow, his son, was understood to have paid about $1,500 ransom for release of his father, who was received by the rescue party at Ahuacatlan. They later went to Tepee, en route here.
