TRIAL OF KEYES HIGH POINT OF OIL CRASH CASE Trusted Public Servant 25 Years Found Guilty of Taking Bribes. Thf t one of * torle* of article* on the collapse of the Julian Petroleum corporation. BY GEORGE IL BEALE tTnited Press Staff Correspondent LOS ANGELES, April 9.—The trial of former District Attorney Asa Keyes on bribery conspiracy charges attracted more attention than any other event that followed the collapse of the $100,000,000 Julian Petroleum Corporation. Keyes had been a trusted public servant for twenty-five years, the last six of which he served as district attorney. He had brilliantly prosecuted scores of noted cases. Even at the time the various Julian cases were finding their way into court, he was sending William Edward Hickman to the galiows for the murder of 12-year-old Marion Parker. Work for Acquittal But Oct. 30, 1228, the grand jury indicted Keyes for assertedly accepting money to work for acquittal of twelve defendants he was prosecuting for conspiracy to wreck the Julian company. Indicted with him were Jacob Berman, former Julian official and a defendant in the conspiracy case, Ed Rosenberg, broker and another defendant in the case, and Ben Getzoff, a Spring street tailor. The indictment followed a statement by Superior Judge William Doran who claimed that convictions would have been certain had not the prosecution been dilatory. Buron Fitts, then lieutenant-gov-ernor of California and district at-torney-elect of Los Angeles, took over the prosecution of Keyes and his codefendants. Turned State’s Evidence Fitt’s first move was to persuade Berman to turn state’s evidence in return for immunity. The rest was fairly easy. With Berman telling of passing money and gifts to Keyes in Getzoff’s tailor shop and other witnesses substantiating his testimony, the jury quickly was convinced. A few hours after all evidence was in, the jury found all defendants guilty. Keyes carried an appeal to tne conviction and remained in county jail for a year until the higher court upheld the verdict of the trial court. He then went to San Quentin penitentiary, where he had sent thousands of criminals, to begin serving a term of from one to fourteen years. Rosenberg went to prison, too. Getzoff, convicted with Keyes and Rosenberg, was paroled when he turned state’s evidence against Harold (Buddy) Davis, Keyes’ chief deputy. Getzoff told of paying money to Davis in the same case and Davis was ordered to follow his former superior to San Quentin. SAFER FILM IS IN USE Stored Paper Is More Inflammable Than New Type, Speaker Says. liu Science Service ATLANTA, April 9. Ordinary newspapers, when stored in lai go quantities, present a greater fire danger than acetate safety film used for x-ray photos and movies. They are not as inflammable, however. as the nitrate film formerly used exclusively, and which caused the disastrous explosion and fire at the Cleveland Clinic. This announcement was made here today to the American Chemical Society by Dr. John C. Olsen of the Brooklyn Polytechnic institute, reporting on researches he made in collaboration with Austin J. BrunJes and Victor J. Sabetta. Sprained Ankle Causes Sait By Tii"' * Snreinl HAMMOND. Ind., April 9.—A sprained ankle sustained when he slipped on a rug in a restaurant here is the basis of a $1,500 damage suit filed by Ned C. Smith against Charles Reorris, proprietor of the restaurant.
“For nine years I was troubled with acne. I tried everything I could think of and everything people told me but it didn’t do any good. Last winter a nurse where I was working told me to take Lydia E. j Pinkham’s Vegetable Compound to build up my system from the inside, so I did. When I had taken three bottles my face was 95% better. I kept on and now I haven’t a single pimple on my face, chest or back.”—Mary L. HeinitZt Carrington, North Dakota.
