SOVIET GROUPS PUT ALL FUNDS IN FAMILY POT Movement Is Encouraged by Government; Expenses Are Shared. BY EUGENE LYONS United Press Staff Correspondent MOSCOW, April 4.—Voluntary communes, in which groups of people merge all their earnings and live a completely communistic life, are being formed in ever increasing numbers throughout the Soviet union. Such communes have been in existence ever since the revolution, especially among students. But in the last few months, under the spur of the general drive toward socialization, they have acquired the proportions of a national mass movement. Their number, indeed, has become so large that a congress of representatives is being called in an effort to put the movement on a more organized basis. The government and the Communist party, of course, are encouraging this tendency in every way possible. Everything Shared The movement takes different iorms. In size, the communes range from a few friends sharing an apartment in common to entire houses or groups of houses in which all earning, all spending and all domestic work such as cooking and care of children, are done communistically. A commune in Moscow visited by j your correspondent will indicate the j general nature of the arrangement, i It contains about fifteen families, j all living in the same house. The! earnings ol all are put into a com- j mon fund out of which the living | expenses of the whole group are j paid. Although some of the families earn only about 100 rubles a month and several as high as 300 rubles, j they contribute their entire salaries j and share alike in the common ' fund This is in accordance w r ith the golden rule of communism: “From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. ...” Wives, Children Work In several of the families, the 1 wives and sometimes children also ' work. Their wages likewise are thrown into the general pot. Special rules govern the extent to which members may draw upon the common funds for pocket money, theaters and other indulgences and definite appropriations are made from month to month for clothes and other special expenditures. Several servants, a cook, a kinder- j garten teacher and other employes of the commune as a whole are j paid out of the common fund. In addition, the women of the com- | mune take turns in house-cleaning j and other tasks, from which those j women who work outside are freed. The harder domestic chores, such as wood-chopping, are divided among the men. Leaders of the group admitted to the writer that a good deal of friction develops occasionally. Sometimes it is even necessary to exclude some family because it is unwilling or unable to live on a communal basis. A good many communes go smash in the early stages of their existence. the night, and today Ras Tafari was prepared to rule as Ethiopia’s emperor in full fact as well as name. But he had two possible reasons for uneasiness. The first was Ras Kassa, a powerful chieftain who like himself was able to trace his ancestry back through a host of kings to Solomon and the queen of Sheba. Ras Kassa might like the throne if he could get it. The second reason was Lej Yasu, grandson of the great emperor Men-Elek 11. Lej Yasu was overthrown in 1916 because of his sympathy with Germany in the war and because of his leanings toward Mohammedanism in this Christian country. He put up a good fight, 16,000 soldiers being killed in a great battle before he gave up the throne. Though he has been a captive of
the church since 1921, he still has aspirations. On the defeat of Lej Yasu, Zeoditu, daughter of Menelek 11, was crowned empress. Feb. 11, 1917. Ras Tafari, son of Menelek's nephew, was made regent and heir. Abyssinia is a country nearly as large as Texas and New Mexico combined. WATER TAXIS PROPOSED Bu United Press LONDON, April 4.—Some talk of being circulated here predicting water busses and taxis to circulate on the Thames river. Sir Samuel Instone declares that water busses would be more comfortable than motor busses, and provisions have been made by some private concerns for piers along the river to house the boats and take on passengers. This would eliminate much traffic congestion.
