ITY AWARDED EIGHTH PLACE ,IN FIRE WASTE Recognition Made on Basis / of Loss Reduction in SI,OOO Flames. Indianapolis today was awarded eighth place by the United States Chamber of Commerce in its national competition on fire waste. The award was given on the basis of reduction in the number of fires Ljsulttng ir. losses of $1 000 or more Jb cities with population ranging ■from 250.000 to 500,000. Members of the committee pointed out that cities awarded recognition in this list, show efficient fire department operation. Cities receiving the award are: Rochester, N. Y.: St. Paul. Seattle, Dallas, Portland, New Orleans, Cincinnati, Newark, N. J., and Memphis. Philadelphia won the prize for cities with more than 500,000 population. The 382 cities In the 1929 competition reported average fire losses of $2.61 per capita, against a total national average of about $4. The United States Chamber. In co-operation with various state and city trade associations, has conducted the annual fire waste competition since 1925. Committee members said the movement has given impetus to fire prevention movements, resulting in savings of millions of dollars each year in fire losses. PRITCHARD SEEKS POST Former City Judge Enters Race for Criminal Court Bench. Candidacy of Walter Pritchard, former city judge, for the Republican nomination for criminal court judge, was announced today. Pritchard, a native of Indianapolis and son of the late James A. Pritchard, criminal court judge from 1906 to 1910. declared he is not allied with any faction.
