UTILIZATION OF MOTOR POWER BUILDERS' GOAL Perfect Streamlining Vital Necessity, Belief of Franklin Head. The next great forward step in the development of the American motor car will concern itself not so much with the building of larger power plants but with the means whereby more complete utilization may be made of the tremendous power of the present-day automobile engine. This opinion was expressed last week by H. H. Franklin, president of the Franklin Automobile Company, pioneer manufacturer of air-cooled motor cars. "Our modern automobile really has tremendous power and speed,” said Franklin. “However, we have not yet learned how to utilize this power and speed to the maximum, and until we develop more perfect streamlining, we shall not. Wind Is Resistant "When one travels sixty miles an hour in an automobile one encounters a tremendous opposing force in the form of wind resistance. When we learn to minimize this we will be able to increase the speed of an automobile without adding to its power. Or, putting it another way. partial elimination of wind resistance will enable a motor car to go faster and ride smoother with a given charge of gasoline. Few’ persons realize that today, beyond a certain point, a car’s horse power must be doubled if the car is to be capable of Just five miles more of speed per hour. Not only are the multiple effects of wind resistance itself being studied by automotive designers and engineers, but the adverse effects on the speed of a motor car of such incumbrances as headlights, fenders, bumpers and molding are also being analyzed. Streamlining Is Science The entire subject literally is immense, and streamlining, heretofore in popular parlance just a word to indicate harmonious lines on a motor car’s body, is today approaching the status of a science. “The ultimate automobile will reveal new ideas of streamlining. It will be capable of greater speed and because of its streamlining will have entirely different lines. This will not. ccgne about in a year or two, but in the course of time. Our Pirate types this year take on new forms of streamlining through concealed running boards; but as advanced as this is, it is but a step toward the ultimate car. In the meantime engineers are ■working daily on this most vital

An entirely new type of aviation truck, in reality a super-service truck, in which is embodied many new appurtenances for rendering quick and efficient fuel and lubrication sendee to airplanes at landing field, recently was announced and put Into use by
problem and when their labors have been crowned with success motorists will have revealed to them new' conceptions of power and beauty in automobiles.” HUPP OIL IS FILTERED Better Operation Is Achieved by New System. Clean oil is necessary to the long life, efficien operation and economical upkeep of the modern jarge automobile engine. This is one of the many manufacturing axioms of the Hupp Motor Car Corporation. Hupmobile believes that cleaning only a part of the engine oil and then dumping that, cleaned oil back into the dirty oil in the engine base, is just as futile as attempting to clean a gallon of muddy water by pouring it into a pint of clean water. Therefore, Hupmobile has provided in its three new eights complete oil filtration, and only clean oil is pumped into the main, connecting rod, piston pin and other important engine bearing surfaces. DODGES OF HIGH TYPE Engineering on Autos Last Word in Modern Efficiency. From an engineering standpoint, the new' Dodge cars are classed among the most interesting offerings of the industry for 1930. The new engines have the most modern type of combustion chamber head, providing sufficient compression for efficiency and economy as well as power output without in any way making the engine sensitive to carbon. The combustion chamber is shaped so that the full fuel charge is fired at once. There is no “pocket” into which the mixture may escape and thus burn more slowly than the main charge. This has resulted In ample pow'er and smoothness. The “breathing” capacity of the engine, due to generous size and construction of the carburetor and intake manifold, is responsible for the steady pulling ability and power development.
