STATE WOMEN’S GROUP OPPOSES LABOR SURVEY Indiana Federation Battles Attempt to Obtain 8-Hour Day. Battling any attempt toward the legislation of an eight-hour day for women, the Indiana Federation of Business and Professional Women today opposed a survey of working conditions in Indiana by the women's department, of United States department, of labor. ‘‘We feel that the movement for a survey is •>ut. a forerunnner of the labor department’s attempt to obtain an eight-hour day for Indiana women.” declared Miss Bess Robbins attorney, a member of the federation. Hold "Job" as Basis "It has been customary in past, urveys made by the government to suggest a schedule of working hours for women following the purvey. "We believe laws which affect work should have the Job as a basis and not s:x." asserted Miss Robbins. "The c. 0 1h-hour-day may be light lor the woman who holds a position temporarily until marriage, but business women want to be treated .n hours and wages on an equal footing with a man. “Our federation will oppose any attempts to pass an eight-hour-day law for women in the state legislature," Miss Robbins said. “Survey of No Benefit” ‘‘A survey will not benefit women. If working conditions are bad, a survey will not find it out. A member of our organization. Miss Forba McDaniel, who was appointed to a committee to invite the women's bureau of Washington to Indiana for a survey, has withdrawn as a committee member,” Miss Robbins said. Mrs. Elsa Huebner Usen is chairman of a Y. W. C. A. committee seeking the survey. Despite the deflection of the federation club members from the survey. the Y. W. C. March 25.A bit of drama that occurred in a speeding locomotive cab came to light todav when the family of George F. Robinson, engineer, publicly credited E. Milburn, his fireman. with averting a wreck and keeping Robinson's 49-year record clear of accidents. Late Saturday as the Milwaukee and St. Paul passenger train piloted bv Robinson neared Excelsior Springs. Milburn noticed Robinson had slumped in his seat. The engineer had died of heart disease. Milburn leaped across the cab, seized the throttle and brougl the train to a stop a short way from where a slow freight was going from the main line to a siding. The freight train out of the way, Milburn ran the passenger to the Excelsior Springs station and turned it over to an other engineer. LARGER STARS SOUGHT Ner. Wilson observatory here, using anew instrument that has just been put into use. It is known as the fifty-foot inteferometer. and consists of a steel "bridge" 54 n. feet long on which move mirrors to pick up the light of a star. With a smaller instrument of the same type, attached to the 300-mch telescope, the world's largest, F. G. Pease found the largest star known at present. This is Antares, in the constellation of the Scorpion, and is large enough that if it were hollow it would hold the solar system with the earth and other planets out to Mars, w ith 55.000.000 miles to spare on all sides. The scheme, extorting money from speakeasy proprietors under threats of raiding them and utilizing prohibition agents to make the raids when victims refused to pay, was good but it did not work, Adolph E. Kubitz Jr. admitted in federal court and got a six months’ jail sentence. Kuditz pleaded guilty to impersonating a federal officer. A confidence man, preying upon rooming house keepers, is sought by police today following defrauding of one woman and attempt to defraud another. The man rented a room from Mrs. Martha Davis, 2150 North Rural street, giving her a cheek for sls and receiving $5 change. He told Mrs. Davis he was a saxophone player and had left his saxophone at a hotel. Mrs. Davis loaned him an instrument belonging to her daughter with which to practice and he disappeared with the instrument. The check was worthless. A man offered Mrs. Catherine Strum of 3935 College avenue, a check for sls in payment of $7 room rent and asked $8 change. Mrs. Strum refused the check and asked him to get it cashed and to give her the money. The man took the key to the room and did not return. DANCE SPONSOR OPENS FIGHT TO DISBAR LAWYER Legion's Answer to Demand of Attorney Comes in Court Action. ‘•Retaliation" was the title of today's chapter in court proceedings embarrassing the "Mad Marathon” in Cadle tabernacle after Wilfred Bradshaw, commander of Madden Nottingham American Legion post, sponsoring the marathon, brought disbarment proceedings against T. Ernest Maholm, attorney, in circuit court. Maholm announced Monday he would demand the presence of all dance contestants in a superior court Wednesday to appear as witnesses in a civil trial for $2,500 delinquent support money alleged to be owed by Richard Edwards, marathon manager, to his ex-wife and children. Stark Files Affidavit Several hours later Prosecutor Judson L. Stark filed an affidavit in criminal court charging Edwards with child desertion, a felony, carrying a penalty of 1 to 3 years imprisonment. Dance managers declare that each of the contestants will be allowed to appear in the coutroom. accompanieu by a staff of nurses. “There will be no dancing in my courtroom,” Judge William O. Proposed consolidation of school districts Nos. 77 and 82 with a six-teen-room building at Christian park on English avenue, is expected to bring a delegation before the school board tonight in protest. At the last meeting, delegations favoring and opposing the proposed change were heard, but the board took no definite action. School No. 77 is located at Sherman drive and English avenue, and school No. 82 is at Emerson and English avenues. The board also expects a delegagation opposing removal of school No. 69 from Thirtieth street and Keystone avenue to Thirty-fifth street and Keystone avenue.

Beery was not aboard. Those killed w’ere George Maves, the film actor’s personal pilot; Mrs. Cynthia Maves, the pilot's wife, and Lynn Hayes. The bodies were badly burned.
