CANADA FACES SQUABBLE OVER BAN ON BOOZE Politicians ‘Put in Box’ by Demand for Clearance Halt to U. S. Hv ficrij/pt-Hoicard S'etctpaper Alliance MONTREAL, March 21.—The bill to prevent official clearance of liquor cargoes from Canada‘to the United States obviously has put a large number of Canadian politicians in an embarrassing position. It is a government measure, but it is so full of political dynamite that the opposition apparently is going to confine itself to shadow-boxing rather than real fighting. The leader of the opposition in the debate that followed introduction of the bill confined himself to discounting the probability of trouble between the countries arising from a continuance of the present system of export and a query as to why the bill had not been presented before. The prime minister, who introduced the measure, based his argument largely on moral grounds. His denunciation of government officials acting as intermediaries between the distiller and the bootlegger for violation of laws of a friendly neighbor will be bound to get instant response and approval from the temperance elements throughout the country. Bill Will Be Costly The law is going to cost Canada, but King cleverly discounted that by admitting it in advance and arguing that money was not, after all, as important as the breaking up of the association between Canadian officials and rum-runners, which is under the present system perfectly letral. Whether the new law would create anew problem in the form of gangs of smugglers along the international waterways remains to be seen. There are plenty of people who believe that it will and that the cost of fighting these will be heavy. But there will not be many members of parliament who will have nerve enough to say so and take a chance on the hostility of the temperance people at home. Cynics Rap at Idea There must be an election in Canada shortly and cynics are hinting that the new law has been introduced with one eye on the effect it will have on vote-catching, and

Annullment of the marriage at Mexico City of Alice Gutnecht, above, Wisconsin university cc-ed, and R. A. Davis, World war veteran, ended the strange love tangle in which Davis courted Miss Gutnecht during a temporary lapse of memory due to a shrapnel wound. When he recovered, he remembered he had another wife and two children at Mesa, Ariz. that no matter which party is returned to power after the election, no determined effort will be made to enforce the new act. That necessarily remains to be seen. But there is no doubt that the immediate consequence of the proposed law will be of benefit to the government. The temperance people will be delighted and nobody else will care particularly.
