HUGE NARCOTICS SHIPMENT PREY OF lUGUARD Agents Search Docks of N. Y. for $3,000,000 in Morphine. By T’nUed Prrn* NEW YORK, March 18.—Wartime regulations, with ail their former secrecy and precaution, were recalled on New York's waterfront today as agents attempted to stop a reported $3,000,000 shipment of morphine believed to be hidden on the liner France by a huge narcotic smuggling ring. Throngs of steamship officials and visitors were barred from the vessel while secret service agents and many employes of the treasury and customs departments boarded the liner in an intensive search for the valuable contraband shipment. All passengers leaving the vessel, which docked Monday night, also were subjected to a most careful search. Operatives worked all night aboard the big French liner. The tip which started the search epe from the French government, wnieh is co-operating with the Unitwi States officials in combatting the operations of the international smuggling ring. Extent of the ring's operations was shown recently when nearly $500,000 worth of drugs, hidden in trunks, were brought into this country on the White Star liner Majestic and the French liner He De France. TEST BIG U, S. DIRIGIBLE TO FIX UFE SPAN Survey to Determine Fate of Huge Navy Airship Los Angeles. BY ROBERT C. ALBRIGHT United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, March 18—Life of the dirigible Los Angeles is hanging in the balance. The navy board of inspection and survey is subjecting the navy’s oniy rigid airship to gruelling tests to determine its life expectancy. Upon the report rests the airship’s future supremacy in American skies. Already the Los Angeles has outlived the span allotted the average German commercial dirigible, estimated generally at five years. It was built in 1924. More than 100 parts of the dirigible now are at the bureau of standards, under the scrutiny of pre-eminent government scientists. Those include sections of corroded duraluminum, and samples of the Ship's girders, removed during a recent inspection at Lakehurst. The parts each have been replaced, and the ship will continue in operation pending the board’s report, which is expected sometime in May. Although the vessel has been examined carefully by its crew four times a year, the present tests are the first conducted by the board of inspection and survey since the dirigible was received from Germany five years ago. Should the board decree the Los Angeles is good for more than another year of operation, America has in prospect a Zeppelin fleet, unmatched by other nations of the world. The ZRS-4, with nearly three times the flying range of the Los Angeles, will be ready for its maiden voyage, July, 1931. Its sister ship will be completed fifteen months later. A. Evand of the agriculture department said today. “Why raise five bushels of wheat when you can get more money for four bushels?’’ asks Chairman Legge of the farm board. In the south the department urges cotton planters to raise enough food for the family, to increase livestock holdings and to put more land in pasture.
