RIDICULES IDEA OF DUEL OVER SOCIAL HONORS Alice Longworth Doesn’t Insist on Outranking Dolly Gann. 7>v Times BnecUtl NEW YORK. March 10. That widely publicized social duel down at Washington hasn’t been a duel at all, at least so far as one of Its supposed principals, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, is concerned. Mrs. Longworth doesn’t care, and never has cared, whether, as wife of the -.peaker of the house, she outranks Mrs. Gann, sister and hostess of Vice-President Curtis, at official social functions. She would be perfectly happy sitting between our most obscure congressman and the Youngest fledgling diplomat. The first, direct word spoken by Mrs. Longworth on the controversy that has key* Washington society istlr for a year is contained In an interview published here in the cur°nt Issue of Smart Set magazine. Denies Speaking Rumor ‘ Any one who knows me, knows perfectly well that I don’t care in he least where I sit at dinner,” he remarks, dismissing the Gannr ongworth controversy as a thing that Is non-existent. Tire rumor that she and Mrs. Gann are not on speaking terms Is equally without foundation, she says. Mrs. Longworth, whose remarkable poise and charm won for her the newspaper appellation “Princess Alice” when her father was in the White House, also takes time to deny the long-lived story that as Washington’s most sought after hostess, she has become a silent power in politics, that her famous evening salons take the form of political round tables where Republican leaders, with her counsel, formulate the policies they are to pursue in high places.
Idea Ridiculous "It Is only natural, she will tell you, that a great, number of her friends are people whose chief interest is politics, and that in the course of an evening, political problems should come in for their share of discussion,” say her Interviewer. "As for anything more formal than that—‘ridiculous!’ she will say.” Since her White House days when she stood out even among the striking personalities of the Roosevelt family, Mrs. Longworth has appeared periodically in the public eye. The birth of her only child. Paulina, after she had reached her fortieth year, attracted nation-wide interest. And on this, Mrs. Longworth expresses an interesting opinion in the interview—that the child erf a mature mother is the most fortunate. "She came to me at an age when I had no desire to escape from my responsibilities* says Mrs. Longworth. “Had she been born when I was a great deal younger. I might have welcomed distractions that would have taken me away from her.” CLUB TO HOLD DINNER Young Democrats to Hear Address by Candidate for Judge. VAST SOM FOR STATE BUILDING TO AID JOBLESS $600,000,000 Program Will Relieve Unemployment, Lamont Reports. Bu United Press WASHINGTON, March 10—Encouragement for the nation’s unemployed was found today in the report of Commerce Secretary Lamont that a total of $600,000,000 is to be spent this year in eight states for construction and ma.ntenance of state, county and municipal public works. These states are the latest to announce co-operation with President Hoover’s $7,000,000,000 construction programs for the year, as a means of combating industrial depression. Speeding up of the program “seems well established,” Lamont said. Figures Received The commerce department now has complete returns from Governors of more than two-thirds of the states, as well as reports from federal departments, commissions, and public utility companies. One of the eight states included in the latest report was Pennsylvania, where the expenditure of $305,988.118 for public works was indicated by Governor Fisher. Pennsylvania, with New York and Ohio, previously reported, will spend more than $1,000,000,000 for construction and maintenance during the year, Lamont said. Estimates Given Other new estimates were: Michigan, $93,000,000; lowa, $70,000,000; Kentucky, $51,670,000; Maryland. $46,860,000; Rhode Island, $20,000,000; Utah, $8,800,000, and Nevada, $3,250,000. Expenditures in the utility group for construction and maintenance during the year will total $3,500.000,000, Lamont estimated. This group includes railway, telephone and telegraph companies. State goi’ernors and officials under them are “acting vigorously to advance the construction program,” Dr. John M. Gries, chief of the new commerce department construction division, said.
