MACHINE GUNS SNUFF LIFE OF EX-BEERBARON Gangster-Slayer, Trapped, Kills Self; Three Others Escape Police. By United Press HOBOKEN. N. J, March 8 —Novice machine gunners were traced through this quiet old city today—a city recently become popular through Its dramatic revivals and its quarter seidels of beer—as authorities tried to solve the murder of Frankie Dunn, a beer runner, who had turned to legitimate business. One of the novices at gangland’s practice of machine gunning, Frank Dugan of west New York was trapped and committed suicide rather than submit to arrest. Knocked Down Frankie Dunn had been known as one of Hoboken’s biggest beer runners, and is said to have amassed 12,000,000. But he turned from his illegitimate profession and became a barrel manufacturer. The shooting in the heart of the Bohemian section of Hoboken precipitated a running fight between the men and thirty policemen called from the station, just a block away. Dunn was waiting for an elevator in the terminal building when two men approached and one knocked him down. The two ran for the street. The clatter of machine gun bullets aimed from another door peppered the wall around him. Only two of the bullets entered his body. Officer shot Two officers seeing the men leaving the rear of the building with a sub-machine gun tucked ‘under their coats, opened fire as the men entered a coupe across the street, continuing their machine gun fire. Patrolman John O’Toole was struck in th# hand. The gunmen were unable to start the automobile and one escaped, firing as he went, while another darted into a stairway only to become trapped upstars where he killed himself. Two otfier gunmen also escaped. JAPANESE PRINCESS’ MEMORY IS HONORED Second Anniversary of Daughter’s Death Observed by Emperor. Bv United Press TOKIO. March B.—Hirohito. emperor of Japan, and his consort. Empress Nagako, today observed the second anniversary of the death of their second daughter, Sachiko Hisa-No-Miya, who died March 8, 1928. The imperial couple, it is understood, will visit the imperial mausoleum and observe the usual Shinto rites in memory of the dead. The two baby princesses, Shigeko, Teru-Fo-Miya and Kazuko. Taka-No-Miya, probably will accompany them. Princess Hisa was buried March 13, while Emperor Hirohito was preparing for the formal ceremonies of his accession to the throne. The tragedy cast a gloom over the whole enthronement ceremonies. The emperor’s two remaining daughters. Princesses Teru and Taka, are In excellent health and are the favorites of all Japan. Minn.) that many improvident and exorbitant postoffice leases have been made by the postoffice department shortly will be investigated by the senate lobby committee. The committee has decided it has jurisdiction because attorneys for interested companies, as well as the postofflre department officials themselves. have attempted to influence legislation by appearing before the

senate appropriations committee in secret session, asking that the Maas amendment to the postoffice appropriation bill will be stricken out. LIQUOR BUYER CASE CARRIED TO HIGH COURT U. S. Attorney at Boston Appeals Jury’s Acquittal on 2-Pint Purchase. By United Press BOSTON, Mass., March 8. —Question of whether a citizen has a right to purchase liquor under the prohibition act was to go to the supreme court of the United States today. The appeal was to be filed by Elihu D. Stone, assistant United States attorney, to test the legal right of Secion 6, Title 2 of the national prohibition act in its relation to individuals. That act says in substance that no person shall sell, barter, transport or purchase any liquor without first obtaining a permit. Decision o. the case which would have national status, although it has been in lower courts before, was precipitated in the case of James E. Farrar of Watertown, who was indicted by a federal grand jury on Feb. 7 on a charge of purchasing liquor for beverage purposes. Farrar moved to quash the indictment against him, which was sustained by Judge James M. Morton Jr. Thursday and Stone immediately relegated the question to national status by announcing he would appeal the decision against the government’s case. The case involved the purchase of two pints of liquor by Farrar, a street railway employe, from Frank Rotondo of Medford.
