NET PROFITS OF FOX ISSUES UP DURING BATTLE Amusement Shares Double Earning Power Over Last Year. tn>tr,l Pre** NEW YORK. March 7—While battle for control of the Fo* Film Corporation was rafting in urious courts and bankers’ circles, the huge amusement enterprise in 1929 more than doubled its net profits for the preceding year, it was revealed in the company's annual earnings report, made public today. Net profits for the year ended Dec 28. 1929, amounted to $11,848.278. after all charges, equal to $12.87 a share earned on the combined 820,660 no-par shares of Class A and 99.900 no-par shares of Class B stock. This compares with $5,957,218. or $6 47 a share earned on the combined shares in 1928. In addition, there was a profit of $5,612.609 on the sale of securities in 1929 which was credited to surplus account against charge-ofls for depreciation of silent films. The Fox Theaters Corporation and wholly owned or controlled subsidiaries reported for the year ended Oct. 25. 1929. net profit of $2,748.006, as compared with $1,536,980 in the previous year. The total liabilities, which have been responsible for the difficulties of the two companies, were revealed for the first time in the report. Current liabilities of the theaters unit total $65,428,029, including $17,751,904 owing to the film corporation. Combined current liabilities of the two companies eliminating inter-company liabilities, amount to $90,739,885. Combined quick assets of the enterprises total $29,264,396. As the refinancing plan approved by the stockholders provides approximately $60,000,000 in new money, the proposal is estimated to leave the two companies with about $30,000,000 current payables and $4,500,000 in cash between them. Current earnings are expected to augment this considerably. Marriage Licenses Rogr! Smith. 21. of 2410 Cornell, clerk, and .lohnnie Mai Moore. 20. of 1815 Yandes, maid. The inquest also brought out the psychology of a gangster's widow. Two years ago she testified at the inquest over the body of Tim Murphy, her first husband, who also was murdered by gunmen. “I guess I've had more love and better husbands than most women,” she said. "Johnny was a lovely" husband. Something like Mr. Murphy. He was a pallbearer at Tim's funeral, you know.” Following instructions of an ! anonymous informant who tele- | phoned that “William. John C. Mellett A newspaper editor who insisted on printing the truth is the hero of a novel of John C. Mellett, local author, issued by Bobbs-Merrill company today. Under the title of "Ink,” the reader is giveif a glimpse into some very modem problems and the part that newspapers sometimes, but not often, p'-ay. Bootleggers, high finance, special privilege and crooked politics, are shown in their successive efforts to curb the impulse of this particular editor to tell the people the truth. His conflict with these forces and his final triumph, with fortune and love as the rewards, is given a fast moving and dramatic, portrayal. There is action, romance and a message in the novel. Ink seems likely to gain even greater favor than Mellett's former novels. Legal Notices NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING.
