In the Cotton Market
IBy Thomson & McKinnonl NEW YORK, March 7.—Cotton was firm in the first hour, advancing 15 points on some short covering and a good deal of buying by spot houses. Around 15 cents for the July position the market hesitated for a period and then dropped back to last nights’ prices on some profittaking mixed with selling by local traders, here was nothing pronounced in the news. Other markets were not sufficiently active to influence cotton in its newly acquired tendency to take its tone from matters somewhat remote from the cotton business itself. In this connection we may add that the recent decline in cotton was hardly justified except along these lines. \ prospective increase in the carryovers of less than a million bales hardly explains a drop of prices well below the cost of production unless it foreshadows general decline in the whole economic surroundings. At 1 o'clock the May position was selling at 14.55 after having sold at 14.50 on out-of-town business supposed to have originated in the mill section of the Carolinas. NEW ORLEANS —March 7 * H’.eh. (By Thomson A McKinnon) NEW YORK. March 7.-PossibU-ity of early passage of the tariff bill, coupled with the promise of the easiest credit conditions we have had in several years, found emphatic reflection in the security markets today. Practically all classes of stocks participated in what probably was the most buoyant session since the fall collapse, with Increased public response to the brighter outlook. Perhaps the most significant development of an encouraging nature, insofar as general business is concerned, can be found in the growth of commercial borrowings recorded in this week’s bank returns. This suggests an early return to more productive capacity as spring expansion of operation proceeds. We anticipate during the coming months that the periodical trade reports will reflect the growing impression that further slow, but nevertheless persistent improvement is under way. It would not be surprising if it develops that curtailment in both the automobile and copper industries has been carried a little too far, and that inventories have been permitted to contract somewhat too sharply. If this surmise proves correct, we have a background for expansion in these two industries, which in turn might be far-reaching in its effect on other lines of business.

GRAIN MARKET UNSETTLED ON NEWS REPORTS Conflicting Factors Have Dampening Effect on Futures. Bv United Press CHICAGO, March 7.—Continually conflicting crop reports and a swinging from bull to bear sides kept the Board of Trade in a bewildered condition today, and a 1 the close prices broke slightly. Tne market was extremely uncertain, traders buying and selling almost in the same transaction. Prices held steady until noon when they eased somewhat to below the previous close owing to denials of crop damage in Texas. The farm board statement still holds the center of the stage, however. Corn was off sharply but oats held Ann. At the close wheat was unchanged to %c lower, corn was % to 2. lower and oats was %c lower to Me higher. Provisions were strong. High winds in Kansas and Nebraska are creating some apprehension regarding the blowing of the dry top soil, while there was a report that Amarilla, Texas, and the surrounding area had suffered one of the worst wind storms in years which had severely damaged the crop. Liverpool was % to 1% cents higher at the close. Buenos Aires was Vi. to % cent lower -at midday. Cash prices were % cent higher. Receipts were eight cars. Action in the corn pit was rather small. After an early fractional gain with wheat selling became more pronounced and prices fell away, being fully a cent down at mid-session. Cash prices were 1 to 1 cent lower. Receipts were 260 cars. Oats were practically unchanged at mid-morning with only minor fractional gains showing. The market was featureless and followed wheat. Cash prices were unchanged. Receipts were fourteen cars.
