PUSH SILL FOR INDEPENDENCE OF PHILIPPINES Say Hawes-Cutting Move Will Get Attention in Senate Soon. B'J Srritps-Hoxcard Setcspapcr AUUince WASHINGTON, March 7.—The senate will consider Philippine independence when the tariff debate Is over. Senator Hawes ( 'Dem., Wis.) predicted today. Hawes and Senator Cutting of New Mexico have jointly introduced a bill providing lor the withdrawal of American sovereignty in from five to seven years. Th?.y predict their bill will be reported favorably. The prolonged debate on the tariff bill has brought the nuestion of Philippine indepc t.dence to a head in the senate. It was disclosed that the Philippine? are shipping approximately 600,000 tons of sugar annua y ’n*o the United States, duty free. Philippine agricultural products of all kinds, and many manufaciurcd articles, are coming into vigorous competition with American products. The three principal American farm o:-gani rat ions urged independence, so the tariff law could be made applicable to the Philippines. The American Federation of Labor also urged independence. Old Factory Burns Bn Times Special. COLUMBUS, Ind.. March 7.—Fire of undetermined orgin destroyed the main building of the old Rider canning plant here causing a loss of several hundred dollars. The building was unoccupied and due to its bad condition no insurance w'as carried. How'ever the east wing of the building which had recently been rebuilt and in which was located a slaughter house owned by Frank Gibson was saved, although the roof was badly burned.

GUARD WOUNDS WHISKY RUNNER 1,000-Case Cargo Found on Captured Rum Tug, IS v United Press CLEVELAND, 0., March 7.—One man was seriously wounded and a second arrested when coast guardsmen .overhauled a rum running tug loaded with 1,090 cases of Canadian whisky after firing on it with rifles and a one-pounder today. The tug, an armor-plated craft, was overtaken half way between .Lorain and Cleveland by a large coast guard cutter commanded by Captain J. T. Hagelove. The wounded man gave his name as Fred Hentrie, Detroit. He was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital in Lorain and was reported in critical condition with two bullets in his back. The other man gave his name as Joe Hanna and was lodged in Lorain city jail. Captain Hagelove said the rum boat refused to stop after two shots were fired across its bow from the one-pounder and he ordered his men to use rifles. Before 8:30 P. Charges that an Indiana statute, ; enacted in 1919, attempts to control acts of nature were included in a | suit filed in federal court late Thursday to have the law governing weight of bread sold in the state declared unconstitutional. ! Ogden, Indiana attorney-general.
