PREPARE FOR CLOSING RUSH OF TAXPAYERS Authorities Are Ready for Last-Minute Jam of Thousands. Nearly 90.000 Indiana federal Income taxpayers will march to the Federal building or to a convenient mailbox and hand approximately 520,000,000 to Uncle Sam within the next two weeks. With midnight, March 15, the final date for filing income tax returns, but a small proportion of the thousands required to file returns had done so by today. For the year ending June 30, 1929, Indiana income taxpayers turned over to Uncle Sam more than $25.000,000, but the figure this year is expected to be reduced considerably by the lower tax rate. The rate this year, as reduced by congress, is 1 iter cent less than last year. After deducting $1,500 exemption for an unmarried person, $3,500 for a married person and S4OO for each dependent, the rate is per cent on the first $4,000 net income; 2 per cent on the next $4,000, and 4 per cent on all above SB,OOO nek Tables have been placed in the third-floor corridor of the Federal building in anticipation of the iast-fninute rush of taxpayers. Ordinarily 50 per cent of the cash is paid into the office the last three days, due to big taxpayers retaining the use of the money as long as possible in their business. More than half of the federal income tax is paid by corporations. Figures for the last, fiscal year showed corporations paid 14,650,586, while individuals and partnerships paid 10,516,755. Although approximately 100,000 Indiana persons and Arms are required to make returns, only about half of these actually are required to pay Income tax because of exemptions.
