DRYS PREPARE TO COUNTERACT WET SMASHES Ford, Rockffeller Jr. May Be Asked to Testify Before Hearing. BY PAUL R. MALLON United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Feb. 28.—Although unwilling to admit that anti-prohibitionists have strengthened their case materially during the house judiciary committee’s prohibition hearings, dry leaders are leaving no stones unturned in their efforts to offset the vigorous attack on the dry law made by some of the nation’s biggest business men. With this end in view, Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller Jr. and other prominent industrial and business leaders favorable to prohibition are expected to be invited to testify when the drys start presenting their side of the case next Wednesday. The drys’ plans have not yet been revealed by E. C. Dinwiddie of the National Conference of Organizations .Supporting the Prohibition Amendment, who is in charge of presenting their side in the hear-

ings on proposals to repeal or modify the dry law. Have No Hopes However, it is known that despite the drys’ certainty of victory insofar as the present bills are concerned, they are anxious to counteract the charges of leading wets with statements by equally prominent friends of prohibition. The wets, who still have several more witnesses to be heard next Tuesday, believe they have amassed sufficient evidence on which to take their case to the people in the coming congressional elections, but they are willing to admit privately they have no hopes of getting any of their proposals reported out by the overwhelming dry judiciary committee. When the hearing began the wets had no hope for the seven pending repeal or modification bills, and they have little or no more hope now. Change Claimed The hearings were held ostensibly for propaganda purposes, or in the words of Chairman Graham, to develop whether there has been any change in prohibition sentiment. The wets claim they have shown a change, but the drys are preparing to refute this. President Hoover’s enforcement attitude was drawn into question late Thursday by wet witnesses. Henry Alan Johnston, representing the voluntary committee of lawyers, New York, declared President Hoover’s doctrine that “if a law is wrong its rigid enforcement is the surest guaranty of its repeal’’ was the kind
of policy that would lead to rebellion and once resulted in the American colonies revolting against Great Britain. Johnston appealed to the congress to stop prohibition ‘‘before it is too late.” HELD FOR CRUELTY Man Charged With Torture of Collie Dog.
