HOUCK INDORSES WAREHOUSE FOR CITY MATERIALS Accurate Check Is Needed, Council Finance Head Tells Sullivan. Establishment of a city warehouse so that all materials and supplies will be located centrally and issued to departments as needed, was favored today by James A. Houck, vice-president of the State Savings and Trust Company and city council finance chairman. “The city should have a centrally located warehouse with someone responsible in charge to issue all supplies and keep an accurate record of what becomes of materials,” Houck told Mayor Reginald H. Sullivan. Houck proposed to Sullivan that he introduce an ordinance establishing such an agency, but Sulli-

van advised that a means of financing the undertaking be worked out and listed in the 1931 budget. “We want to do a lot of things of that kind, but have to work out a financing plan first,” Sullivan declared. Charles R. Myers, safety board president, originally proposed the storehouse plan to Sullivan. Councilman Houck also indorsed the proposal that a department be created to check utility meters on complaint of patrons. U. S. NEEDS NOVELIST Living Material on All Sides Not Used, Author Says. By United Press NEW YORK. Feb. 28.—America is incrusted with living material for truly great novels—but lacks a single truly great novelist, in the opinion of Robert Herrick, veteran critic and himself a novelist of high contemporary distinction. Herrick is quoted in the current issue of the Golden Book magazine. “Dickens peopled London with his imaginative creations, as Balzac did all France. Today in the newspapers appear such types as Shearer Grundy, Senator Bingham, Fall Doheny, the Lindbergh epos and the Sacco-Vanzetti tragedy, Gasto-
nia and others, rich in imaginative implications. Here is the raw material of great novels each reader must create for himself, because, as yet, we have no craftsmen sufficiently endowed to fuse refine and transform it into enduring art.” Boy Burns Barn By United Press LINZ. Austria, Feb. 28.—Ten thousand dollars damage was done to the barn of Johann Kirnsteatter, a peasant, who lives in the nearby village of Wichsee, through a fire set by the discarded cigaret of a 9-year-old boy.
