German Star Pleased With Sharkey Win 'if United Press ~ BERLIN. Feb. 28.— Despite the earlv morning hours many German fan* turned on their radios and listened to the United Press account of the Sharkey-Scott fight. It was clearly audible except for short Intervals in the second round. Joe Jacobs, manager of Max Schmeling, who heard the account at the German champion’s home, told the United Press he was pleased with the outcome. Schmeling returned from an outing in the Alps just in time to hear the result. •Thank God. However, I expected it.’ He added he was looking forward to meeting Sharkey in June. Helen Whaley, who holds the quarter-mile, half-mile and mile girls’ state amateur championship on roller skates, will defend her title in a half-mile race at the Riverside rink Saturday night against Elsie McDaniels. The race will start at 9. I. U., CHICAGO CLASH By United Press CHICAGO, Feb. 28.—Chicago’s track team will compete with Indiana at Bloomington tonight in the final dual meet before the Big Ten affair next week. The Maroons are favored to win.
BY GEORGE KIRKSEY, United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Feb. 28.—A radical shakeup of the Detroit Tigers has left but fourteen players from last year's team on the 1930 squad. There are nineteen newcomers, including nine players who saw some service with the Tigers late last season. The new group includes nine pitchers, four infielders, three outfielders and three catchers. Underhand Southpaw There are many excellent pitching prospects, including Chief Hogsett, southpaw underhander from Montreal; Arthur Herring, who won nineteen games and lost thirteen for Oklahoma City; Joe Samuels, who won nine and lost six for Toronto; Morton Nelson, who won fifteen and lost twelve for the Mission Pacific Coast League club; John Wyatt, who won twenty-two and lost six for Evansville; Charlie Sullivan, southpaw, who won fourteen and lost fifteen for Ft. Worth, and Frank Barnes and Phil Page, recalled from Toronto, The pitchers from last year’s team are Uhle, Whitehill, Carroll, Sorrell, Prudhomme and Graham, who was with Seattle part of the season. The battle for shortstop will be between Bill Akers, who batted .295 for Beaumont; Bill Rogell, w'ho batted .336 for St. Paul, and George Wuestling, who came from Port-

Elias Funk, formerly with the Yankees who batted .385 for Hollywood; Spencer Harris, who has been up with Washington, Athletics and the White Sox and who batted .340 for Minneapolis, and John Stone, farmed out to Toronto last season, will attempt to break in as regulars. The other outfielders are Bob Fothergiil and Harry Rice. Two Veteran Catchers Five catchers are on the roster, including George Rensa. purchased from Toronto; Bill Steinecke, who batted .322 for Seattle, Ray Hayworth, recalled from Toledo, and two veterans, Red Hargrave and Mervyn Shea. Detroit’s probable lineup follows: Alexander, first base; Gehringer. second base; McManus, third base; Rogell, shortstop: Funk, left field; Johnson, center field; Fothergill, right field. The Tigers led 7 to 4 at the intermission after twenty minutes of defensive play. Howell and Groves led a second half rally that knotted the count at 11 to 11, and gave them a lead which they held to the gun. Ragsdale and Crawley were best for the Tigers. TEACHERS RAP ROSE State Normal Rallies to Conquer City Rivals, 37 to 3L rv Times Special TERRE HAUTE, Ind. : Feb. 28. Indiana State Teachers rallied in the second half to nose out Rose Poly, city rivals, in a fast contest here Thursday, 37 to 31.
