Surprises Make Life Interesting, BY MARTHA LEE. It’s the little things In life that make us happy and sad. I suppose it is because the big 'wonderful things that come sort of knock us out” for the time being. And the big sorrows the same way. Some way it has been arranged that we can not feel, in happiness or sorrow, more than our emotions can take care of. That is why families who must suffer through what seems an unbearable sorrow to an outsider, come through, battered and scarred, but breathing. So it remains for the little things, the things that are small enough to be realized and seen in complete perspective, that hurt us most or give us the most happiness. Here's what I'm trying to say. Your husband might come home from the office tonight and tell you he had been promoted to a job where he is making twenty-five times the amount of money he was when he left you this morning at 7:30. There is something to make a modern wife happy, if I know my modern wives. But would you stand up and shout? Would you run over and hug him and tell him howhappy it made you? Would you, in other words, emote? You would not. You would stand there kind of dumb like, and the rest of the evening you would walk around in a daze. But., let him come in with his hands behind his back, with a-pack-age in those hands. And let him hand it to you, with a funny little twinkle in his eye. and let you open it, up, to find, buried in a wad of green tissue paper, a bunch of fresh, woodsey smelling violets, and you'll Just jump up and down Bnd shout, because you can grasp that unexpected happiness. You see it from every angle. It is small, but perhaps all the really' important things that happen in most of our lives are small. All of which brings me around to what I want to say. Watch the details of your everyday life a.s though they were mountainous, and pass over the big ones, because they sort of take care of t hemselves anyway. You’ve seen women, with all the 'makings’ of beauty. They have pretty fares, nice hair, good figures and a becoming dress. But they look perfect frights. Their hair isn’t dressed or cut becomingly. They use far too much makeup, besides using the wrong shades. They have shoes and stockings that do not go together, to say nothing at how they clash with the dresses. In a word, they have paid absolutely no attention to detail. The same thing probably is true in many homes where unhappiness is holding forth. The home itself has the good foundation that should make for happiness. But the husband and wife have forgotten all the little things that used to make them happy and contented. They have forgotten how much the little surprises mean. You women who have written countless letters wanting to knowwhy your husbands have lost Interest in you, why they never take vou any place, w-hy they neglect you, look to the details of your home, your daily life, your appearance,

and you may find the answer. And the same applies to you husbands who know why your wives no longer seem affectionate and loving. Try a tiny surprise and see if it doesn’t work like a charm.
For COLDS We all catch colds and they can make us miserable; but yours needn’t last long if you will do this: Take two or three tablets of Bayer Aspirin just as soon as possible after a cold starts. Stay in the house if you can—keep warm. Repeat with another tablet or two of Bayer Aspirin every three or four hours, if those symptoms of cold persist. Take a good laxative when you retire, and keep bowels open. If throat is sore, dissolve three tablets in a quarter-glassful of water and gargle. This soothes inflammation and reduces infection. There is nothing like Bayer Aspirin for a cold, or sore throat. And it relieves aches and pains almost instantly. The genuine tablets, marked Bayer, are absolutely harmless to the heart. Women Too Often Shop for Mates BY MRS. WALTER FERGUSON A Chicago judge says that one should shop around for husband or wife as one does for hat, dress or coat. Theoretically, such advice is sound. Only It does not go far enough. The method of shopping is equally important. The wise woman does not expend her strength and energy running about here, there and yonder looking for anew gown. Instead she acquaints herself with what certain shops carry; she knows what she can afford to pay; she is sure of the style and material she wishes. Therefore, she goes to the place where such articles are kept and if she Ls fortunate enough to find a garment that almost suits her, she will make an early selection. Shopping around through multitudes of stores results in a complete state of mental indecision. You had best take the first thing you find that most nearly answers the description of that which you desire. It’s the same in shopping for husbands. So many times one fails to go to the right places for them. Take** a small town parent, for instance. Often she appears to believe that husbands drop from the clouds because she w-ill invariably

harangue her daughter because of a longing for the wicked city. This diagnosis is incorrect. The girl merely wishes to get to those places where eligible men are to be found. Cities used to be such Meccas. They are fast losing this reputation, however, especially New York. The first canny father who advocated co-education did not do so, I suspect, from a sincere concern ever feminine learning. He knew that where boys abide, girls may get husbands. Many a splendid woman makes the awful mistake of being too careful with her matrimonial shopping. She passes up excellent material, all wool and a yard wide, for something flashier or for what she thinks
