Aviation PLANE BUILDERS STRESS BEAUTY t IN 1930 TYPES jDesigners Center Attention on Comfort. Interiors at Air Show. BT. LOUIS, Feb. 21.—This year, more than ever before, airplane designers have centered their attention on comfort and beauty. This is apparent from a look at the eightyseven airplanes on display here at the international aircraft exposition. Although there have been a number of engineering developments, of course, they are overshadowed by the noticeable “policeing up” of the ships. The new four-place Ryan, which had a great mystery unveiling the opening night of the show, is a good example. It has soft cloth unhoLstery. The pilot's seats are adjustable. The back of the right hand seat folds down, making a full length sofa along that aide of the ship. The plane is painted and nickeled and shined. Others are the same way. There is a reason for all of this !The time is at hand when people outside of the “air game” will buy airplanes. Many of the future buyers are people who buy more on looks than on mechancal performance, because they are not aviators and they don’t understand aeronautical engineering. There seems to be a trend toward amall flying boats and amphibions, the type appealing to the rich man who lives along lakes or rivers. •These, too, are finished in the most luxurious fashion. The large transports, destined to run on the airlines, also are very much dolled up for their prospective passengers. The interors of the huge Condor, Patrician, Fokker and Ford are done in dainty cloths and bright colors. The Patrician has a kitchenette and electric stove. Even the open cockpit planes are finished up to look pleasing on the outside, although little can be done In the cockpit to make them compare with the snootier cabin ships.
Visions Radio Planes ST. LOUIS, Feb. 21.—Governmental requirements for the use of radio on all passenger airplanes, nimilar to those in effect at present for ocean ships, are seen as “a matter of months” by Herbert Hoover Jr., radio engineer with the Western Air Express, in a paper that he presented here today before the meeting of the Society of Automotive Engineers.
