CHICAGO MONEY CRISIS PASSED; FUNGS PLEDGED Business Leaders Will Give Millions for Salaries of Employes. BY MERTON T. AKERS Press Staff Correspondent CHICAGO, Feb. 20.— Policemen whistled on their beats and school teachers hummed at their desks today, because Chicago's millionaires had agreed to dig down into their pockets for as many millions as needed to pay the long overdue salaries of more than 43,000 public employes. Modest homes all over the city where, since before Christmas, the press of poverty has been heavy, were gay because of the action taken by seventy emissaries of big business at a conference in the somberly magnificent mid-day club Wednesday. "We will do our part," was the keynote of the conference and there was not a discordant tone, as Chicago's capitalists, railroad executives. packers, department store owners, utilities’ executives and other leaders of commerce and industry pledged their aid in the financial crisis. “It was indicated we could raise $43,000,000 at once.” was the cheery assurance of Attorney Silas H. Strawn, who, as head of the citizens’ "rescue committee,” has been tireless in hjs labors to evolve a way out of the morass of debt that has crippled operations of the local governments for months. Pledges of an additional $7,000,000 are expected immediately, and as soon as they are received the plan worked out at the “conference of the millions” Wednesday will become effective. City, county, school board and sanitary district officials have listed their essential needs for the period until July 1, when tax moneys will be available, at $74,000,000. Whether each will be forced to curtail operations approximately one-third to keep within the $50,000 000 emergency loan or whether the additional money can be obtained. was conjectural today.
OLD-TIME COLD REMEDY—DRINK TEA!
Get a small package of Hamburg Breast Tea at any pharmacy. Take a tablespoonful of this hamburg tea, put a cup of boiling water upon it, pour through a sieve and drink a teacupful at any time. It is the most effective way to break a cold and relieve grip, as it opens the pores, relieving congestion. Also losens the bowels, thus breaking a cold at once. It is inexpensive and entirely vegetable, therefore harmless.—Advertisement..

JURY SESSION NEAR END Marion county grand jury today convened in what may be its final session in probe of disappearance of an alleged record granting $600 annual salary increases to county court reporters. Prosecutor Judson L. Stark instructed the jurors in statutes governing the case. County judges are charging county officials, including commissioners, auditor and attorney, with responsibility for the missing document. County officers say the record never existed.
