GOLD STORAGE ANTIQUATED BY NEW INVENTION Latest Preserving Process Expected to Reduce Food Prices. B.u Times Sdi <ml NEW YORK. Feb. 20.—A new process of food preservation which Is expected to revolutionize the marketing and consumption of foodstuffs, will constitute the most important scientific marvel of 1930, according to The American Magazine. The new process, it is stated, will eliminate cold storage as it is now understood, and will make possible the year-around marketing of perishable fruits, vegetables, fish and other foods at midseason prices, with ail their original taste and texture. It will reduce shipping costs from 100 to 300 per cent and will lower retail prices correspondingly, the article declares. Present methods of home refrigeration will be sufficient to make the fullest use of foods thus prepared. Formula Simple The new system, while being a high scientific development, is based upon a simple formula that long has been know’n, the relation of the size pt ice crystals to the rapidity with w'hich they are frozen. The ordinary cold storage process, says the author, freezes large crystals at a slow rate and they destroy the walls of the cells in meat or fish that Is being preserved, w'ith the result that the substance in the cells wffiich gives meats its flavor and freshness, is drawn out. By accomplishing the rapid freezing of food inside and outside almost simultaneously, small crystals are formed and the original state is preserved for an indefinite period. Thus, the mast ordinary care permits the merchandising of perishable foods much in the same manner as dry foods. Waste Removed AH foods thus treated will be frozen in cartons or containers and all waste parts will be removed at the time of packing. Among other novelties expected of the system, is that oysters will be available all the year, whether in an “R” month or not. The idea upon which the new system is founded was developed by Clarence Birdseye of Gloucester, Mass., while fishing through the ice in Labrador. The fish he caught froze immediately after being drawn from the water, but revived upon being placed in sea water in his cabin. “From this.” Birdseye declared, “I learned that ice is the closest intermediate stage between : life and death.” Believing that he had discovered the secret of an important industry. Birdseye experimented for five years with methods of freezing sea foods, but- his company failed. He reorganized it and started work again and within a short tune one of the biggest food concerns in the United States bought his interests outright ! for $22,000,000. It is this national concern that will place the new j products on the market within a short time. Arthur Murray and a partner dancing the Piedmont Pivot.

Here is the sixth dance in the series on “Stepping in Style” which Arthur Murray, noted dancing instructor, is writing for The Times and NEA Service. BY ARTHUR MURRAY Written for NEA Service ITS versatility and grace make the Piedmont Pivot popular in the ballroom. One of the most fascinating and popular of the left turns, it can be done to fast or slow music or to waltz time. Here is the man’s part: 1. Step forward on the left foot, turning one-quarter to the left. 2. Step forward on the right, turning one-quarter to the left. 3. Step sidewise to left with the left foot. 4. Draw up right foot to left, with weight on the right. You have made a half turn. Repeat four counts. Here is the woman's part: 1. Step back on right and turn on ball of the right foot, onequarter turn to the left. 2. Step forward on the left and turn one-quarter to the left. 3. Step to right side with the right foot. 4. Draw the left foot up to the light with weight on the left. “What Wouldn’t I Do for That Man?’’ (fox trot is suggested as the music for the Piedmont Pivot. NEXT: The Wesleyan Whirl. DELAY ON BOND ISSUE IS BLOCK TO JAIL REPAIR Council Project Approved Dec. 2 Unadvertised by City Officials. Steps to repair the city prison at headquarters which this week was declared by James A. Houck, city council finance chairman, to be worse than a “hog pen,” are being delayed by failure of city officials to advertise a bond issue authorized by the former city council Dec. 2. Culminating a long campaign headed by John F. White, former south side councilman, the council authorized the $17,000 bond issue to repair the present prison and build an addition. City Controller Sterling R. Holt's office never has advertised the intent to issue bonds, office attaches says. Requires 29 Days The legal department is preparing a legal advertisement which will require twenty-nine days before the bonds can be sold, it is said. Under the Slack administration, Municpal Judge Clifford R. Cameron made frequent visits to city hall to bring about improvement. Finally on Aug. 27, 1929, the board of safety requested a $30,000 appropriation The works board cut the request to $20,000 and transmitted it to City Controller Sterling R. Holt, who failed to recommend it to the council. At Dammeyer’s Request On Nov. 8 the board of public works sent a request for a $17,000 bond issue to the controller after Otto Mueller, architect, had drawn plans for the project on request of

The former council unanimously passed General Ordinance No. 92, authorizing the bond issue, after extensive investigation by White, chairman of the health committee. Tucson, Ariz., recluse, is sane enough to be hanged at 5 a. m. Friday. One man on the jury disagreed. Immediately after the jury returned its verdict as to the 31-year-old woman’s sanity, Lorenzo Wright, prison superintendent, began preparations for the execution. The composure with which Mrs. Dugan had met every obstacle heretofore in the long fight to free her, broke Wednesday night and a physician was summoned to her cell when she became hysterical. Mrs. Dugan was convicted in February, 1928, of the murder of A. J. Mathis, for which she had been housekeeper.

GOT OVER HER NERVOUSNESS Louisiana Lady Took Cardui for Dizzy, Weak Spells and Felt Stronger. “About three and a half years ago I was feeling very bad,” writes Mrs. George E. Wilson. 623 Atlantic Avenue, Algiers, La. “I had dizzy, weak spells from a run-down condition. “I had a severe pain in my side. I was very nervous—too nervous to learn how to drive my car, until some friend advised me to take Cardui. “After I had taken my third bottle, I didn't have any more dizzy spells. I kept up the Cardui until I had taken seven bottles. I was much stronger and better, and then I could drive my car without any fear.” Thousands of women nave written to tell how r they were benefited by taking Cardue, when in a weak, run-down condition.
