LABOR CHIEF MAKES PLEA FOR 2.75 BEER Modification Would Aid Unemployed Crisis, Green Asserts. By United Press WASHINGTON, Feb. 20.—Modifiation of the Volstead act to proide for 2.75 per cent beer, was urged by William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, in a letter made public here today to Chairman George W. Wickersham of the law enforcement commission. Both unemployment and the agricultural depression would be aided by such a program, Green said. He cited figures showing the brewing industry consumed 2,500,000 tons of coal each year prior to prohibition, in support of his contention that reestablishment of brewing would cut unemployment. In the last year that brewing was legal, Green added, that industry absorbed 950,000 tons of gram. Transportation of this required 60,000 railroad cars. Also, 20,000 cars were used to convey the beer from brewery to consumer. “The rehabilitation of the brewing industry would set in motion employment of all crafts.” Green said. "New machinery would have to be installed in the hundreds of breweries that have been closed down, as well as the few plants that still

U. S. IS MORE GODLESS THAN RUSSIA, CHARGE Old Religious Beliefs May Be Erased by Revolt, Pastor Asserts. BY DON A. HIGGINS United Press Staff Correspondent KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 20.— America is more Godless than Russia and anti-church expressions of the Soviet regime are merely part of a world-wide revolt against religion, the Rev. L. M. Birkhead. widely known Unitarian leader and liberal, said here today. Mr. Birkhead's comment was drawn by recent protest of Pope Pius XI, followed by high churchmen of Anglican faith, against Soviet policies which Pope Pius said “strike at religion and God himself.” “America is a more Godless country than Russia. A larger proportion is without religion in this nation.” Mr. Birkhead said. "Religion may disappear." By religion, Mr. Birkhead explained, he meant “old beliefs, heavens and hells, Bibles and Gods.” “Some of these governments suggest to take a hand in Russian religious affairs.” he said. “That would be disastrous. We have had enough religious wars. Pope Pius has set March 19 as a day of expiation and prayer, in which he has asked the world to join him to invoke “divine
