The half a hundred men, among e city’s largest taxpayers, indited they would gather at 4 p. m. the Mid-Day Club where Silas Strawn, Robert F. Carr. Lewis Myers and Ernest R. Sargent, president of the Chiago Northwestern railroad; Edward N. Hurley, financier: Sewell L. Avery, president so the United States Gypsum Company, and George o. They are leaders of industry, heads lof vast mercantile organizations, oankers. capitalists, railroad executives and other powers in the I world of finance. They probably ; ould raise billions if they wished. Asked to Pledge They will be asked to pledge purchases of $37.000 000 of the *74 000,000 in. tax anticipation warrants provided in the tentative relief plan of Strawn and his covorkers, it was reported. Then plan is generally understood is to push he attempt to raise the full $74,j 000.000 if the fifty big taxpayers agree to raise half that sum, but to trim the total of $59,200,000 should they pledge a lesser amount. The announcement in New’ York of 11. Wallace Caldwell, president of •he school board, that he had ari ranged for the sale of $48,000,000 in tax anticipation warrants contingent on the approval of certain Chicago bankers did not lessen attempts to obtain relief loctflly.

HUPP DEALERS MEET
R. S. Cole
Officials of Company Are Session Speakers. Important meetings of automobile dealers held in connection with the Inidanapolis automobile show included that of the Hupmobile dealers of the state as guests of Capitol Motors Company, local distributors, today at the Indianapolis Athletic Club. The speakers, introduced by C. A. French, sales manager of Capitol Motors Company, were R. S. Cole, vice-president in charge of sales of Hupp Motor Car Corporation: B. F. Page, district sales manager of Hupp Motor Car Corporation, and J. M. Block, president of Capitol Motors Company. Block said that he was fully confident that 1930 would prove a very satisfactory year for the Hupmobile line. Cole discussed factory plans for the year and assured the dealers that the Hupmobile factories were equipped and organized to supply dealers with cars at the time and in the quantities demanded by the market. Page, recently assigned to Indianapolis territory, expressed himself as highly pleased with the Indiana organization.
RUSSIA NOW IN COMPLETE GRIP OF COMMUNISM Entire Socialization, With Abolition of Religion, is in Effect. BY EUGENE LYONS Vnited Press Staff Correspondent MOSCOW, Feb. 19.—Suppression of private trade and work and the complete socialization of Russia, coupled with abolition of religious forms, toward which the Soviets are rushing headlong, has completely transformed this nation. The Russia of today is a wholly different country from that which was visited, as recently as last fall, by American business men. Half the impressions hitherto gained by travelers here may as well be canceled. They are not true today. In Fighting Mood Faced by the superhuman task they laid out for themselves, the leaders in the Kremlin have gone back to the fighting mood of the period of 1917 to 1920, when they put down civil uprisings and resisted the thrust of white armies and foreign invaders. The policy today is that “the end justifies the means.” The Soviet is through with compromising. The struggle against private trading has been found easy in the cities. Private traders, called “nepmen” offer little resistance to the repressive acts that arc driving them out of business. By hundreds and thousands, their little shops are closing down. This process is simple—heavy taxation, orders to move, or merely orders to "get out.” They ace forced to shut up shop and get out of business as quietly as possible. Work Socialized Lawyers and physicians no longer are engaged in private practice. Their work has Keen socialized. All other "free” professions rapidly are being absorbed into government agencies, and a registry of engineers and technical experts is being made with a view to making them, too, an active branch of the government. In effect, it is like a military draft. The so-called "kulaks,” or well-to-do farmers, are set down as "enemies” of the masses, and are denied the shelter afforded by membership in the co-operatives. So they are being “liquidated.” Their number is between 5,000,000 and 8,000,000, and their disposition offers no small problem to the government. New Newspaper Bit United Press MADRID, Feb. 19.—There’s one more newspaper in Madrid. It is an afternoon paper published by the same interests which control the popular magazine Cosmopolis.

DISTRIBUTER PRAISES NEW RADIATOR TYPE W. J. Robinson Lands Product of Oakland and Pontiac. Current winter weather again is emphasizing the superiority of the Cross-Flow type of radiator, a patented feature of both the Oakland Eight and Pontiac Six. Oakland-Pontiac owners enjoy maximum protection for their ra-
diators at minimum expense because one filling of alcohol or other anti-freeze solution usually suffices for an entire winter of driving, according to W. J. Ro b inson, Oak-land-Pontiac distributor. "Oakland - Pontiac Cross-Flow radiators are built with one- third more cooling area area than actually is required for

ing capacity serves to keep the engine at its best operating temperature. But in winter this excess capacity is put to a different and highly important use. The upper third of the radiator core is ‘liad off for the winter’ by being left empty. Standing cold and vacant it then serves as a cooling chamber in which alcohol or other anti-freeze solution that has been vaporized while flowing through the water passages of the engine is condensed back into liquid form.

Copyright 1930 by Dodge Brothers Corporation QUALITY beyond all previous standards In entering the 1930 market, Dodge Brothers were keenly conscious of two fundamental facts: First, that this year more than ever, vaiue will be the basis of sales. Second, that the public is today better qualified than ever to judge value. Dodge engineers met these conditions by designing two new cars with features that not only satisfy the demands of a thrifty and motor-wise public, but set the standard of values far ahead of any previous conception. These engineers have achieved. SENSATIONAL VALUES A NEW SIX A NEW EIGHT $835 $1095 AND UP, F. O. B. FACTORS AND UP, F. O. B.
