FSTEEL SHARES MOVE FORWARD IN STOCK MART Railroads Rally in Late Trading; List Closes Stronger.
Average Stock Prices
Average of thir'v industrials for Thursday as 272.27. up 1.22 Average of twenty rails was 155.24. up .01. Average of twenty utilities was 07.75. up 76. Average of forty bonds was 93.82. off .20. Bu United Press NEW YORK, Feb. 14—“ Blue Chip’* stocks scored sensational i?ains today on the Stock Exchange while the remainder of the list moved in a relatively narrow course with changes irregular. United States Steel made the best showing of that stock this year, running up to anew 1930 high and leading the entire steel group into higher ground. Steel’s gain of more than three points was paralleled in the railroad group by a spurt in New York Central, while in the special issues Eastman Kodak crossed the 200 mark for the first time this year. A few issues with a few shares outstanding made much wider gains. New York & Harlem had another of its characteristic runups, touching 298, where it was up 22 points. Vulcan Detinning reached 121, up 17 points, and held most of it. Rails Run Up Steel shares generally were In the fore. In the late trading, however, the railroads had a swift runup and vie with the steels for leadership. Amusements were mixed in a narrow range; oils were dull; coppers eased in light trading on poor reports from the industry; foods were dull and irregular; shares met selling most of the day; utilities turned irregular on profittaking; motors met the same fate as utilities; equipments were firm. Near the close a sale of Gimbel Brothers was made at 12%, up % on 10,000 shares. Montgomery Ward came back to its previous close late in the day, but Simmons failed to regain all of an early loss. Gillette, a weak spot, was down 3 points in new low ground for the year. Tickers were behind about ten minutes in the early trading, but they caught up and near the close were only two minutes late. Sales were near 3,700,000 shares. Buying Holds Near the end of the day United States Steel touched 189, where it was up 4% points. Other steels ruled strong to the end, notably Youngstown Sheet and Tube, which, it was rumored, was to make broad expansion this year without considering possibility of a merger with the Republic unit. Incidentally, the Cyrus Eaton steels were in urgent demand all day at sharply higher prices. Leading issues were bought right to the close and the majority closed at their best levels of the day. However, there were enough losses elsewhere in the market to give the list an irregular appearance. Call money closed at 4% per cent, to which it was raised in the afternoon after renewals had been arranged at 4 per cent.

In the Cotton Market
(By Thomson A McKinnon' NEW YORK, Feb. 14.—English cables were very strong this morning, and while New York advanced at one time 20 points, it failed to show the strong undertone that was evidently the case at Liverpool. Private cables from that point were decidedly more cheerful than they have been for some time. Indian cotton again showed a slight advance. At home there was very little news one way or another. The south sold in New York. Local traders appeared to be bearish. A leading spot house, however, was a large buyer of May contracts. The report on the grade and staple of the present crop published at 1 p. m. showed 76.4 suitable for delivery on contract vs. 83.14 per cent last year. We see in this the possibility of a great scarcity of contracts later on in the season. We therefore remain of the opinion that cotton should be bought on all decliner. NEW ORLEANS —Feb. 14High. Low.
