BITTER BATTLE IN AUTO TRADE IS PREDICTED Public’s Confidence Needed in 1930, Studebaker Official Says. Automobile manufacturers must lay emphasis on building public confidence if they are to survive the birtcr competition in auto sales this year, D. G. Ross, chief engineer of the Studebaker Corporation, told the Indiana section. Society of Automotive Engineers, at the Claypool, Thursday night. Two hundred representatives of the motor sales and manufacturing industry with local dealers and several prominent engineers attended. Ross stated that, although great progress has been made in this year's models, he still discerns imperfections and possibility for further improvement. The Diesel engine, which recently set anew fuel record by running from Indiana to New York with a f1.38 fuel cost, was on exhibit and examined by engineers. Its operation was explained by D. J. Cummings of the Cummings Engine Company, Columbus, the builder. Other speakers included Herbert C. Snow, chief engineer of the Auburn Company: Louis Schwitzer of the Schwitzer-Cummings Company here, and Bert Dingley, Indianapolis section chairman. Announcement was made that the next section meeting will be held here March 13.

Federal Body Accepts Plans for Memorial at Vincennes. Rv Vnit"i Press VINCENNES, Ind., Feb. 14 —Approval to plans for the million dollar memorial building to be built at Vincennes as a national shrine to George Rogers Clark, by the Federal fine arts commission in Washington, completed all preliminary arrangements preparatory to the work. Acceptance of the plans by the commission was an indorsement of the choice made last week in Vincennes by the memorial architecture committee, composed of some of the most noted architects in the country and two laymen. Its simplicity, dignity and strength of design are outstanding, Parsons said. The memorial is a collaboration of three arts—architecture, painting and sculpture. Only the plan of architecture was submitted to the fine arts commission and later designs for the paintings and statuary will be submitted. Colonel Francis Vigo and Father Gibault, Clark's aids, will share with their* leader in the stone immortalization.
