ment commission's program for enforcing the dry laws and centered his attack on the commission's recommendation for elimination of jury trials in minor prohibition cases. He criticised the entire report for its failure to suggest remedies for the abuses of prohibition enforcement, as he said President Hoover had promised in his campaign speeches. ; He quoted President Hooter’s words in his speech of acceptance that “common sense compels us to realize that grave abuses have been occurred —abases which must be remedied." “In each succeeding speech, however," Wagner said, “the problem of the abases of prohibition shrank in Mr. Hoover’s estimation. “What abuse did the American people have in mind when they heard Mr. Hoover use that word? Did they have in mind a little crowding of the courtrooms? Did they have in mind that the prohibition agents had trouble in finding the laws relative to prohibition? Did they have in mind a little lost mo-
| tion between the departments of' treasury and justice? Are these the ; grave abuses which worried the people of the United States? “No, Mr. President; they were far graver, far more serious than those. When we heard the words ‘grave abuses’ we 2 thought of the killing and maiming of our citizens by armed enforcement officers under circumstances, which, in many instances, can be described only as deliberate bloodshed.” ' Five Trucks Bought pv Times Soecinl GREENCASTLE, Ind., Feb. 6. DELEGATES GET PEACE PLEA OF WORLDWOMEN ‘Good Agreement’ Forecast for London Parley by MacDonald. Bn United Pres* LONDON, Feb. 6.—Responding to peace memorials, presented by women representing four world powers, Premier J. Ramsay MacDonald cautioned the women to remember that “it is just as important and effective to reach an agreement to reduce building programs as to reduce the actual number of ships in the world’s navies.” The premier said he expected the
naval conference to reach “a good agreement.” Henry L. Stimson, who, with Reijiro Wakatsuki of Japan and James R. Fenton of Australia, assisted MacDonald in receiving the delegation at St. James palace, told the visitors their presence had been “a real inspiration to us.” In a brief speech, the American outlined the history of past conflicts, and stressed the need of removing the fear of one people for another. MacDonald was busy sorting papers from his brief case as the delegations approached the group of diplomats waiting at the end of the committee room. As Mrs. Edgerton Parsons of New York, representing the women of America, began speaking, with the words, “The time has come to lay another stone on the edifice of peace,” the premier glanced up hastily and gave his complete attention to the speaker. Presenting her memorial “in the name of 6,000.000 women members

of peace organizations,” Mrs. Parsons continued: “These represent one-fourth of our women voters, who pledge the support of our efforts." The British, French and Japanese representatives followed Mrs. Parsons’ presentation. Two palace servants then presented MacDonald with a large box, containing the joint petitions, for which the premier graciously thanked the women. MENINGITIS IN SUDDENSPURT Seven New Cases Increase Sick Total to 96. Seven new cases of cerebrospinal meningitis at city hospital today increased the total number since Dec. 9 to ninety-six. ’Twenty-nine active cases now are in the hospital and four patients have been discharged.
